THE PRAETORIAN GUARD: The SOLDIERS Who Changed the Course of ROMAN HISTORY
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
The Praetorian Guard, originally established as a bodyguard unit for Roman emperors, evolves into a powerful military force that significantly influences Roman politics. Its origins trace back to the Roman Republic, where military commanders formed temporary bodyguard units for protection. By the time of Augustus, the first emperor, the Praetorian Guard became a permanent entity, tasked not only with safeguarding the emperor but also engaging in espionage and intelligence gathering.
Throughout its history, the Praetorian Guard's power fluctuates, often leading to political turmoil. Under Tiberius, the ambitious Sejanus manipulates the guard to gain control, but his reign ends abruptly when Tiberius discovers his treachery. The guard's influence peaks during the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors, where it plays a pivotal role in the assassination of emperors and the installation of new rulers, often in exchange for financial incentives. This trend continues with subsequent emperors, leading to a notorious incident where the guard auctions off the empire to the highest bidder.
Ultimately, the Praetorian Guard's unchecked power leads to its downfall. Constantine the Great disbands the unit in 313 AD after defeating Maxentius, who had relied on the guard's support. This marks the end of a military force that had been synonymous with betrayal and political manipulation for centuries, leaving a lasting impact on Roman history.
