Pompey the Great: Rome’s Most Illustrious General, Part II
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
Pompey the Great, a pivotal figure in ancient Rome, navigates a tumultuous period marked by military triumphs and political rivalries. Following his victory in the Sartorian War, Pompey faces a significant challenge as the slave rebellion led by Spartacus escalates. The Roman Senate, initially dismissive of the uprising, finds itself overwhelmed as Spartacus's forces grow to an estimated 100,000. With Pompey occupied in Hispania, the Senate turns to Marcus Crassus, who ultimately defeats Spartacus but is overshadowed by Pompey's later claims of glory.
As Pompey returns to Rome, he is elected consul alongside Crassus, and together they reinstate the plebeian tribune, a vital office for representing the common people. Pompey's military ambitions continue as he seeks to confront Mithridates VI of Pontus, a longstanding adversary of Rome. Despite initial setbacks, Pompey successfully campaigns against Mithridates, leading to significant territorial gains and the establishment of new provinces.
However, Pompey's political influence wanes as he faces resistance from the Senate, wary of his growing power. In a bid to consolidate their positions, Pompey, Crassus, and Julius Caesar form the First Triumvirate, a political alliance that briefly strengthens their hold on power. Yet, the alliance deteriorates following personal losses and military defeats, culminating in a civil war ignited by Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon. Pompey's eventual defeat at the Battle of Pharsalus leads to his flight to Egypt, where he meets a tragic end, assassinated by those he sought refuge from. His death marks the conclusion of a remarkable military career, leaving a complex legacy in Roman history.

Gaius Appulius Diocles: The Richest Athlete of All Time?
Leone Jacovacci: A Black Boxer in Fascist Italy
“You won’t believe this, but they’ve stolen a train.” Uploaded 02-11-23That was the special announcement heard on police radios in the early hours of August 8, 1963, after a gang of criminals pulled off one of, if not the most infamous heist in British history. They robbed a Royal Mail train heading from Glasgow to London and made off with 120 mailbags containing £2.6 million (which is around £60 million in today’s money). Nobody was killed, although the train driver received a serious cosh on the noggin. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week!https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1Love content?
