Down and Out

Mild Mannered Supermen - A Genesis Podcast

Show Notes

Right Between The Eyes:

In this episode of Mild Mannered Supermen, we begin our deep dive into Genesis's 1978 album …And Then There Were Three… with one of the band's most exhilarating and underrated opening tracks—“Down and Out.”

Fresh off Steve Hackett's departure, Genesis faced another defining crossroads. Now reduced to the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, the band responded with a song that proved they could still deliver the power, complexity, and musicianship that had made them progressive rock legends.

We take a close look at Tony Banks's intricate composition, Phil Collins's extraordinary drumming and soaring vocal performance, and the dynamic interplay that makes “Down and Out” one of the most technically demanding songs Genesis ever recorded. We also compare the original studio version with a rare live performance, exploring how the trio brought this challenging piece to the stage during one of the most important transitions in the band's history.

Although …And Then There Were Three… would introduce Genesis to a broader audience, “Down and Out” serves as a reminder that the band's progressive spirit was still very much alive. For many fans—including us—it's not only one of the greatest album openers in the Genesis catalog, but one of the finest songs they ever recorded.

Join Mild Mannered Supermen as we celebrate this overlooked masterpiece and the beginning of a bold new era for Genesis.
