What the Hell Happened to Venus?

Cool Worlds

Summary

Payday bars express their discontent with other candy bars, advocating for their simplicity with just salty peanuts and sweet caramel. The discussion then shifts to chronic migraines, highlighting Botox as a preventive treatment for those experiencing 15 or more headache days a month. The treatment is noted for its effectiveness but comes with significant risks and side effects, emphasizing the importance of consulting a doctor before use.

The conversation transitions to the planet Venus, described as Earth's near twin but transformed into a hostile environment with extreme temperatures and atmospheric pressure. Venus's surface is characterized by volcanic activity, with thousands of volcanoes, yet its geological features suggest a stagnant lid rather than tectonic plate movement. This raises questions about the planet's history and the events that led to its current state.

Recent studies indicate that Venus may have once had conditions suitable for liquid water, but significant atmospheric changes have led to a runaway greenhouse effect. The presence of deuterium in Venus's atmosphere suggests a history of water loss, complicating theories about its past habitability. Upcoming missions to Venus aim to gather more data, potentially revealing insights into its geological history and the possibility of past life. The discussion concludes with a reflection on the lessons Venus offers about planetary evolution and the fate of life in the universe.

The Cool Worlds Lab just announced the discovery of the first transiting Jupiter-analog outside the Solar System, named "Kepler-167e". The transit method has been incredibly successful at finding exoplanets, with thousands now known thanks to NASA's Kepler Mission. But, planets on wide orbits, like Jupiter, are very tricky to find with this technique. Prof Kipping explains how his team overcame these obstacles to make this important discovery, opening the door to learning about alien Jupiters in much more detail.::More about this Video::► Kipping et al. For billions of years the Sun has been the perpetual, life-giving star in our sky. It's a force of immense power, yet one we take for granted in our every day lives. But like all things, it too must eventually end. Today, we chronicle the future of our home star, its various phases, why this all happens, and the final fate of our Solar System.Written and presented by Prof David Kipping. Edited by Jorge Casas.
