Eurasia Group’s Ian Bremmer: Biggest Threat to World Is Rogue Actors – From Putin to Musk
Harvard Business ReviewSummary
Marketers are increasingly voicing concerns about the effectiveness of their advertising campaigns, labeling ineffective spending as "bullspend." This term highlights the disconnect between metrics like impressions and actual revenue generation. The discussion emphasizes the need for businesses to focus on tangible results rather than superficial metrics, with LinkedIn being noted for delivering high returns on ad spend.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, political risk expert Ian Bremmer shares insights on the current geopolitical landscape. He highlights a bipartisan effort among U.S. lawmakers to address key issues such as industrial policy and immigration, contrasting this with the often dysfunctional political climate back home. Bremmer also discusses China's recent shift towards a more open business environment, as indicated by Vice Chair Lu He's statements at the forum, suggesting a departure from previous isolationist policies.
Bremmer warns that rogue actors, such as Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, pose significant risks to global stability due to their unchecked power and decision-making processes. He stresses the importance of understanding the limitations of forecasting in political risk analysis, advocating for a nuanced approach that considers what is politically feasible rather than merely what is ideologically desired.
The economic mood at Davos appears mixed, with CEOs expressing confidence in their balance sheets while government officials voice concerns about geopolitical fragmentation and the widening gap between developed and developing nations. Bremmer notes that while there are positive growth prospects in regions like India and China, the overall global economic outlook remains uncertain, particularly as layoffs continue in sectors like technology and finance.

Eurasia Group’s Ian Bremmer: Biggest Threat to World Is Rogue Actors – From Putin to MuskUploaded 19-01-2319 Jan 2023---When we think about people with incredible control over their institutions and no checks and balances, we often think of classic rogue actors like Russia’s Vladimir Putin. But Ian Bremmer, founder and president of global risk research consultancy Eurasia Group, would also include business leaders like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. They’re not dictators of countries, but they do control, truly control, immensely powerful global platforms that operate with some level of sovereignty outside the power purview of governments. “And I think that the disruptive implications of that for good and for bad are also unprecedented.”This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. 3 Ways To Make Your Writing ClearerUploaded 03-11-213 Nov 2021---If your message isn’t clear, changing a word here or there won’t help. You need these 3 strategies to get to the heart of the problem. 00:00 Writing is hard, especially under deadline00:20 Sentence-level corrections won't save you if your message isn't clear00:31 Cut the "since the dawn of time" opening01:03 Write claim-based topic sentences01:48 Make sure people are doing thing in your sentences ...02:18 ... unless you don't want them to be doing things02:50 SummaryNext time you finish a document with a few minutes to spare, don’t squander your time editing with minor sentence-level revisions — changing a word here, cutting a word there (and then putting it back). You should certainly spell-check and proofread every document before you click submit. But if your message isn’t as clear as it needs to be, changing the word “purchase” to “buy” isn’t going to help. Instead, focus on the big picture with these three strategies: 1) Cut the “since the dawn of time” opening and get right to the point. 2) Turn those descriptive topic sentences into topic sentences that make claims. 3) Make sure people are doing things in your sentences — unless you don’t want them to be doing things. If you get in the habit of using these three strategies, you should find you won’t need to do as much last-minute editing in the future.Based on the HBR article by Jane Rosenzweig: https://hbr.org/2020/04/3-ways-to-make-your-writing-clearerShe has more tips at her "Writing Hacks" newsletter: http://writinghacks.substack.com/This video is co-produced with @Emeritus .
