Summary
Automatic writing emerges as a powerful tool for self-discovery, allowing individuals to bypass the constraints of conventional writing and explore their true emotions. This technique encourages participants to write continuously for two minutes about a significant emotional topic without pausing or editing. The result often reveals unexpected feelings, such as love where one anticipated disdain or vice versa, shedding light on suppressed emotions that contribute to anxiety and restlessness.
The practice highlights the disconnect between our true selves and the facades we maintain in daily life. By confronting these buried feelings, individuals can gain insight into their desires and fears, ultimately leading to greater emotional freedom. While automatic writing may not enhance one's writing skills, it serves as a valuable exercise in authenticity, helping people reconnect with aspects of themselves they may have long neglected.

In order to accurately reflect what we truly think we may have to not to agonise about every word, not to go back and correct anything - and instead, just to write down everything that comes into our minds the very moment it does so. “Usually, when we set out to write, sounding coherent and polished are our central priorities. We may think hard before setting anything down, we keep an eye on spelling, we may go back and correct words that feel not entirely right, we may delete a paragraph or two - all in the hope of eventually reaching a point where what we have articulated seems accurately to reflect what we truly think…”

The founding principle of modern psychotherapy - that it is all to do with one’s childhood - can sound especially irritating. Why should we be forever tied to things that happened infinitely long ago?

Knowing how emotionally mature someone is can be the most important thing to know about them; but this knowledge may take (painful) years to acquire. This is why we've devised a very quick and very reliable test that can - in a few minutes - help us to ascertain our own and other people's level of emotional maturity. It all has to do with how one responds to vulnerability.Uploaded 13-11-19Enjoying our Youtube videos? We can be fifty-five on the outside and four and a half in terms of our impulses and habitual manner of communicating – just as we can be on the threshold of adulthood physically while an emotional sage within. In order to assess our own and others’ emotional development, we can make use of a single deceptively simple question that quickly gets to the core of our underlying emotional ‘age’. When someone on whom we depend emotionally lets us down, disappoints us, or leaves us hanging and uncertain, what is our characteristic way of responding?...”MORE SCHOOL OF LIFEWatch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLselfSOCIAL MEDIAFeel free to follow us at the links below:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ X: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITSProduced in collaboration with: Elaine Songhttp://www.songelaine.com Title animation produced in collaboration withVale Productionshttps://www.valeproductions.co.uk/ Learn more about your ad choices. However healthy it often is to try to fit in and assume we must just be like everyone else, there are also benefits in sometimes accepting that we might in the end not be and this needn’t be a cause of concern or shame.
All of us have deeply unhelpful inner voices inside us, dragging us down with criticisms and unfair accusations. Wisdom involves learning how to replace them with more benevolent guides.
