Ryan Fox: How I Won The Open | For the Love of Golf Special

For The Love Of Golf

Show Notes

Champion Golfer of the Year Ryan Fox joins Iona Stephen and Dan Walker for a very special episode of For the Love of Golf – and he’s brought the Claret Jug with him.

Recorded last week, Ryan sat down with Dan and Iona for a wide-ranging conversation about life as The Open champion.

Ryan takes us inside his unforgettable victory at Royal Birkdale, where he claimed his first Major Championship and lifted one of the most famous trophies in sport.

He breaks down how he attacked the golf course, the mindset that allowed him to perform under the biggest pressure of his career and, in incredible detail, the closing stages of his final round – including the birdie at the 18th that won him The Open and the moment he realised: “Oh s***, this putt is to win The Open.”

Ryan also opens up about life as Champion Golfer of the Year: the messages from some of the biggest names in golf and sport like Jack Nicklaus and Kelly Slater, the reception back home in New Zealand and what it meant to make his dad, former All Black Grant Fox, proud.

The conversation goes deeper into the mentality behind winning too. Ryan reflects on lessons learned throughout his career – including from the late Shane Warne during their time playing together at the Alfred Dunhill Links – and how he can use the experience of winning the Claret Jug to contend for more Major Championships.

Plus, there are tales of travelling with the Claret Jug, his ambitions for the rest of the season, a potential run at the Race to Dubai and what winning The Open means for the next chapter of his career.

And sometimes it’s simply three people who love golf having a brilliant chat with one of the game’s good guys – with the Claret Jug sitting alongside them.

What would you ask the Champion Golfer of the Year? Let us know in the comments.
