Three children went into the house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville in December 1975, thirteen months after the DeFeo murders. They were five, seven, and ten. Twenty-eight days later the family left. Then their stepfather, George Lutz, and their mother put them into a book, a movie, and fifty years of other people's story. The book's cover said A True Story. Their own lawyer told a reporter they had made it up over wine. A federal judge said the book was largely fiction. Investigators found no snowfall for the hoof prints and no police records for the calls. The next owners found original hardware on a door supposedly torn from its hinges. George trademarked the words Amityville Horror and in 2003 sued his own stepson over the name. Christopher Quaratino said George had exaggerated the incidents to profit. His brother Daniel said George hit them. Their sister Missy was five when they moved in. She has never spoken publicly. In the Matthew Farwell trial, his twin brother William took the stand with immunity and walked through his own years with Sandra Birchmore. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins me on what his choices say about him. William, a Stoughton cop, started an affair with Sandra in 2018, when she was in her early 20s. When she told him she was 15 the first time Matthew slept with her, he says he didn't believe her. In January 2021, with Sandra pregnant, he texted that it was "a horrible idea" and he "can't and won't be in the middle of it." Months after she died, he joked about Matthew wiping his phones. He resigned from Stoughton police during the internal investigation. Prosecutors say Matthew strangled Sandra and staged a suicide, and he has pleaded not guilty. Lori Vallow's niece Melani Boudreaux was in a Mesa courtroom a week after Lori's February 2020 arrest, asking for her kids back while JJ and Tylee were still missing. Brandon Boudreaux had filed a memo attributed to Melani's new husband about her being told Brandon needed to die. By November 2020, she was on track to share decisions about the kids again. JJ and Tylee were found that June, and Lori and Chad Daybell were later convicted of their murders. Melani testified for the State at Chad's trial. Matthew Farwell’s defense opened its side of the trial on October 28th with a weekend from 2017. Joseph Harris, a vice president at Massasoit Community College, supervised Sandra Birchmore when she worked there as a peer tutor, and he filed a report after she told him she’d tried to take her own life. On the stand, he said he has no specific memory of that conversation. Under cross-examination, he agreed it wasn’t an emergency, he called neither campus police nor 911, and he has no training to evaluate anyone. Farwell’s lawyers say Sandra was stressed and worried about her pregnancy on February 1st, 2021, and the government’s forensic expert agreed she didn’t examine Sandra’s Apple Watch until October 2026. I lay out both sides of the 29 minutes Farwell spent in her building. Closing arguments are expected the first week of November, and his lawyers told the judge it’s his decision whether he takes the stand.
