Zohran Mamdani’s most significant recent appearance was Monday, September 21, when President Donald Trump visited him at Gracie Mansion ahead of the United Nations General Assembly. According to ABC News and Reuters reporting carried by The National, the meeting was their third in person since Mamdani became mayor, and it produced an unexpectedly cordial political tableau: Trump said Mamdani had great potential and expressed hope he would become a great mayor, despite once attacking him as a communist and a total nut job.

The practical focus was housing. Mamdani said the two discussed redeveloping Sunnyside Yard in Queens, a proposal that could create up to 12,000 homes and roughly 30,000 jobs. ABC News reports that they agreed to establish a new level of communication between City Hall and the White House. Trump acknowledged the project would require federal approvals and probably federal funding. The long term significance is substantial: cooperation on a project of that scale could become one of the defining tests of Mamdani’s mayoralty, particularly as he campaigns on affordability.

Immigration remained a point of disagreement. According to NDTV, Mamdani said he delivered strong opinions about keeping New Yorkers safe while discussing the administration’s immigration enforcement and its decision to end Temporary Protected Status for some immigrants. He nevertheless said he would continue working with Trump where the federal government has the power and willingness to reduce costs for New Yorkers.

The meeting also turned into a press freedom story. Outlook India reports that Mamdani told Trump all members of the press would be welcome at New York meetings, after the White House barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. Mamdani’s public stance placed him alongside the excluded outlets even as he pursued cooperation with Trump.

On social media, The Washington Examiner reports that Mamdani posted a photograph of the meeting on X, calling it productive. That post reinforced the carefully balanced image: pragmatic mayor, combative progressive, and surprisingly effective political bridge.

Earlier this month, Mamdani also sued the Trump administration over planned expansion of the public charge rule, according to ABS CBN News, showing that the new cordiality has not erased major legal and ideological battles.
