When Your Job Feels Like It Doesn't Matter

7 Good Minutes

Show Notes

It's Thursday afternoon. You've answered forty emails, sat through a meeting that could have been a message, and somewhere around three o'clock a quiet question shows up: what is any of this for?

A lot of us assume the answer is a different job. This episode looks at what researchers have found before you go looking. People doing essentially the same work can see it in very different ways. In one university call center, callers who spent about five minutes with a student their fundraising had helped were working far harder a month later. Nothing about the job changed. They could just picture a real person at the end of the call.

Your work may not lack meaning. It may lack a line of sight. And sometimes the nearest person at the end of it is sitting at your own kitchen table.

This isn't a way to talk yourself into a bad situation, and no amount of perspective fixes unfair pay or a bad boss. But for the ordinary, flat Thursday, it's a different question to ask.
