Some nights you drift off without a problem. On others, a sudden kick wakes you just as you’re getting there. If you can’t see why those nights differ, this short exercise gives you a way to look.
For seven mornings, write down three things: whether you noticed a jolt, when you last had caffeine the day before, and one word for how you arrived at bed — calm, rushed, wired, or wiped out. At the end of the week, look for a pattern and change just one thing for the next week.
Some sleep starts will still happen at random. The point is to make the avoidable ones easier to spot and the next jolt less of a mystery.

The kids are finally down. Your body starts to go heavy, and then your leg kicks as if you missed a step. The jolt is over in a second. The question it leaves behind — is something wrong with me? — can keep you awake much longer.
You already know the five-second exchange that ruins an evening — the sharp comment, the sigh, the clipped reply that's still running hours later. This episode is the practical half: what to actually do about it before it reaches your front door.
A manager snaps at you in a hallway. A stranger sighs at you in a checkout line. It lasts five seconds, and you know it probably has nothing to do with you — but hours later, walking through your own front door, it's still running, and your voice comes out flatter than you meant with your own kid.
If a birthday, a free Saturday, or the first day of a trip has felt thinner than you expected, you may have caught yourself checking whether you're happy enough.
You've planned a good moment, maybe a birthday, a holiday morning, or a trip you saved up for, and when it arrives, something feels off. A quiet question shows up: is this as good as it should be? That doesn't mean you're ungrateful.
