Who will carry your casket? In this fourth conversation of our series with Pete Loescher, President of Radical Mentoring, we explore what it means to build genuine biblical brotherhood that lasts a lifetime. We unpack the difference between having friends and being truly known, why meaningful relationships require intentionality and vulnerability, and what it takes to become the kind of brother who walks alongside another man through every season of life. This isn't just a conversation about making friends. It's a conversation about building a brotherhood that will stand beside you through life's greatest celebrations, darkest valleys, and final moments. Throughout this episode, Pete shares a defining experience from his father's funeral that forever changed his understanding of friendship. We explore why the men who stand beside us on our wedding day aren't necessarily the men who will carry our casket, what it means to have a "2 a.m. brother," and why the deepest friendships are built through decades of showing up, speaking truth, and walking faithfully alongside one another. Pete also shares the deeply personal experience of walking his close friend John Ritchie through the final chapter of his life.
We discuss: Why every man needs genuine biblical brotherhood The difference between groomsmen and pallbearers What it means to build friendships that last a lifetime Why being truly known requires vulnerability, not just transparency How sarcasm and insecurity can prevent meaningful relationships What separates casual friendships from genuine brotherhood Why every man needs a "2 a.m. brother" How to intentionally build deeper friendships at any stage of life Why brotherhood provides protection and stability for our families What it means to walk a brother home in his final days
Biblical Qualities of a Friend
Toward the end of our conversation, Pete shares a list of biblical characteristics of genuine friendship that he and his brothers developed to honor their close friend John Ritchie on his 60th birthday.
These are the qualities every man should seek in his friendships—and strive to embody himself.
A close friend is a rare gift — Proverbs 18 A friend gives of his life — John 15 A friend provides wise counsel — Proverbs 27 A friend is an encourager — Job 6 A friend speaks truth in love — Proverbs 27 A friend is delicate — Proverbs 26 A friend is not afraid to clash with you — Proverbs 27 A friend is loyal — Proverbs 17 A friend knows you deeply — John 15 A friend loves without conditions — Proverbs 17 A friend points us to God — Galatians 4
Scripture references are listed by chapter as Pete mentions them in the episode.

One of the questions we kept coming back to was this:
Who will carry your casket?
It's easy to go through life surrounded by acquaintances, coworkers, and casual friends without ever building the kind of relationships where we are truly known. But biblical brotherhood requires more than shared interests and occasional conversations. It requires vulnerability, sacrifice, intentionality, and a willingness to walk alongside other men when life gets difficult.
The men who carry your casket one day won't necessarily be the men who stood beside you at your wedding. They'll be the men who showed up. The men who challenged you, encouraged you, prayed with you, and stood beside you through the years.
As Pete reminds us, "Groomsmen say I will, and pallbearers say I did." The question isn't simply whether you have those men in your life. It's whether you're becoming that kind of brother yourself.
