William Howard Taft: Bathtubs, Bull Moose, and Betrayals

Summary

William Howard Taft, the 27th president of the United States, is often remembered for the humorous anecdote that he got stuck in a bathtub, overshadowing his significant contributions and complex life. Born into a high-achieving family in 1857, Taft was marked by both privilege and pressure, leading to a lifelong struggle with anxiety and a fear of failure. Despite this, he excelled academically and professionally, becoming a respected judge and eventually the first civilian governor of the Philippines, where he implemented reforms that improved local governance.

Taft's presidency, however, was marked by a departure from the progressive policies of his predecessor, Theodore Roosevelt. Initially, he continued trust-busting efforts but soon alienated the progressive wing of the Republican Party by aligning more closely with conservative interests. This shift led to a bitter rivalry with Roosevelt, culminating in a split in the Republican Party and Taft's failure to secure re-election in 1912. After leaving office, Taft found fulfillment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, where he made significant contributions to the judiciary and ultimately achieved a sense of personal happiness.

Despite his historical significance, Taft remains one of the lesser-known presidents, often overlooked in favor of more prominent figures. His legacy, however, includes not only his judicial reforms but also a poignant story of a man who struggled with personal demons while striving to meet the expectations placed upon him by family and society.
