Meyer Lansky: The Mob's Accountant

Meyer Lansky, a key figure in organized crime, emerges as a pivotal character in the history of the American Mafia. Born in Belarus in 1902, Lansky immigrates to the United States with his family, where he begins his criminal career as a teenager. His partnership with Bugsy Siegel leads to the formation of the Bugs and Meyer Mob, which gains notoriety for racketeering, extortion, and bootlegging during Prohibition. Lansky's strategic mind earns him the nickname "the Mob's Accountant," as he helps revolutionize the Mafia's operations alongside Lucky Luciano, establishing the National Crime Syndicate and the Commission to unify various factions for greater profit.

As Prohibition ends, Lansky shifts his focus to gambling, establishing a lucrative empire in cities like Florida and New Orleans. His ambitions extend to Cuba, where he collaborates with dictator Fulgencio Batista to transform Havana into a gambling paradise. However, Lansky's investments face a significant setback when Fidel Castro's revolution nationalizes all businesses, including Lansky's prized casino, the Havana Riviera. Despite this loss, Lansky adapts by investing in Las Vegas, where he continues to play a crucial role in the burgeoning gambling industry.

In his later years, Lansky's life quiets down as he navigates legal challenges, including a tax evasion case. He attempts to relocate to Israel but is denied due to his criminal background. Ultimately, Lansky spends his final years in Miami Beach, passing away from lung cancer in 1983 at the age of 80. His legacy remains complex, marked by both his criminal enterprises and his ability to evade significant legal repercussions throughout much of his life.
