Edward the Elder - One Step Closer to a Unified England
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, ascends to the throne of Wessex following his father's death in 899 AD. Despite being named as his father's successor, Edward faces challenges from rivals, notably Aethelwold, who seeks to undermine his claim. Aethelwold gathers support from the Danes and launches a rebellion, leading to significant battles that ultimately see him defeated and killed, allowing Edward to consolidate his power.
Over the years, Edward focuses on unifying England, leveraging military campaigns against the Danes and strengthening alliances with neighboring kingdoms. His sister, Æthelflaed, plays a crucial role in governing Mercia, but after her death, Edward takes direct control of the region. He successfully fortifies his kingdom and expands his influence, leading to the submission of various Danish settlements.
In the latter part of his reign, Edward secures recognition from Welsh and Scottish leaders, establishing himself as a significant power in the region. His efforts culminate in the strengthening of Wessex and the groundwork for a unified England, which his son Athelstan would later achieve. Edward the Elder dies in 924 AD, leaving a legacy of ambition and consolidation that shapes the future of the English monarchy.
