Andrea's Lucky Bag

Engaging with reality, not IRL, responsibly

Show Notes

When everything online feels like a grift these days, how do you know if you’re just contributing to the storm of negative emotions like fear and despondency, or actually being helpful with what you share?

It’s a *VERY* thin line.

And with the decline of critical thinking and media savvy and the rise of AI slop and fake news, it’s easy to be manipulated by the algorithm and comms plans of the rich and powerful.

I worry about how much negative information I share online, mostly because I’ve been told it’s loads 😊 but know that without knowledge; without awareness; without community of information - we make worse choices. When we know what’s going on, we vote for hopeful candidates. We demand more. We change our habits. We reject the status quo. But how do you do it with a bit of glitter? 🤔

How do we engage in conversations about what’s going on in the world around us and instead of falling into stasis, how do we drive action? How do we reject inevitability as fact and instead find the belief that we can be part of change for better? How do we become hopeful?

I was chatting with James Kavanagh about this in my DM’s about this last week so I thought it would be a good place to start Lucky Bag. It’s episode 0.

Loads of people told me I wouldnt be able to keep this to 5 minutes. They were right. This time. Hoping to hit that goal next week with episode 1. Hope is an action!

On this week’s pod, I talk to poet and stylist Jan Brierton. I first saw her performing her poems at ‘Roots & Rearers’ in the Liberties Festival with Martina Keegan for Uachtarán na hÉireann Catherine Connolly. And when I saw her posting that she wrote her poems on the bus, I knew I had to talk to her about our shared love of the bus. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

With the amount of issues we have in Dublin, it can sometimes feel frivolous and superfluous to even consider talking about the aesthetics of what's being built in a city that is under such immense pressure to even provide the basics. Sure what it looks like doesn't matter. WRONG! Joining me today is Abigail Scott Paul, Global Head of the Humanise - the global campaign for more human and joyful buildings. The campaign is grounded in research; neuroscience and neuro-aesthetics; cognitive science; environmental psychology; place-based studies and evidence. And let me tell you, what it looks like matters. Hugely, Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We are now in the midst of Dublin Theatre Festival which I can already say has been thrilling and exhilarating. Going into week two, I’m talking to the festival’s Artistic Director and Chief Executive Róise Goan about the Irish theatre landscape, how she approached programming the festival and the importance of Dublin having conversations with the rest of the world.

As the popularity of GLP-1's continues to soar, it is so evident that the way they work acts as a dampener of communication between our dopamine receptors. As we suppress our appetite, are we also suppressing our pleasure? I speak with Anna Hutchcroft, Managing Editor of Moi Pleasure.
