She shares the reality of where addiction took her and how Narcotics Anonymous and community became a turning point in her recovery. More from Sober State
Season One of Sober State comes to a close with a short solo episode reflecting on where the podcast started, the conversations that have shaped this season and what I’ve learnt along the way.
Jonah joins me to share his perspective on working in the alcohol and other drugs sector as an AOD clinician and what he has seen and experienced throughout his time in the industry. We talk about treatment, recovery and the importance of meeting people where they are.Jonah also breaks down the Stages of Change model and Choice Point and shares why values can play such an important role in the decisions we make. He reflects on his childhood in Tasmania, growing up with parents who were ministers and being exposed from a young age to supporting people experiencing homelessness. This is a conversation about AOD work, human behaviour, values and the different ways we can understand and support change.
This episode discusses anorexia, eating disorders and body image. Lauren and I are not medical or eating disorder specialists. This conversation reflects Lauren’s personal lived experience and views. This is not intended as medical advice.
Nana joins me to share a story shaped by family, loss and resilience. We talk about losing her brother in a car accident as a teenager, supporting her daughters through sexual abuse at a young age and the brutal murder of another of her brothers years later. She shares the court process that followed, the impact these experiences had on her family and how support around grief and trauma has changed across generations. This is a conversation about unimaginable loss, family, resilience and finding a way forward after experiences that change you forever.
This episode is about a part of recovery I don't think we talk about enough. I share what it's like navigating social situations sober, missing parts of the person I used to be and grieving a life that I know I don't actually want back. In this episode, I talk about the pressure I put on myself to still be the 'fun' one, watching other people drink while becoming increasingly aware of my own sobriety and those uncomfortable moments where I still find myself missing alcohol and drugs. I also share how playing the tape forward helps me remmeber the whole story, rather than just the highlight reel. Recovery doesn't mean pretending every part of the past was terrible. Sometimes you can miss something, grieve it and still choose not to go back.
