In this episode, Kim John Payne pushes back against the Western cultural current of constant busyness and doing, offering a essential counterbalance for parents: dial back on the doing and dial up on the being. He observes how easily we get caught up in the voice that says "I should be doing something," and suggests that children of all ages, little ones through teenagers, simply love it when we're around and accessible, just present with them.

Kim shares his own practice of going into his children's rooms while they did homework on the floor, bringing his mending or journal and quietly being there alongside them. By normalizing this presence when his kids were younger, it felt perfectly natural by the time they were teenagers rather than strange or intrusive. What interests him most is what tends to emerge in those unhurried moments. After ten minutes of companionable silence, a child might volunteer something real: "I don't know why Sophie is so sad these days, what do you think?" Kim recalls exactly such a conversation unfolding, a brief but meaningful exchange about sadness, isolation, and what a struggling classmate might be experiencing, before drifting back into quiet togetherness. Had he been busy doing, doing, doing, that conversation (which touched on pre-depression and isolation) would never have surfaced. Over the years, this simple presence allowed deeper understanding of difficult topics to emerge naturally as his children moved through middle and high school. Kim encourages parents, over the coming week, to resist the pull toward the next task and instead choose to simply sit and be with their kids, trusting that so much unpacks itself when children feel that steady, unhurried presence.

In this episode, Kim John Payne introduces “tone and timing coaching," a simple way to help children (and ourselves) get the tone right when what's said comes out rude, fresh, aggressive, or grumpy. He explains that the content of a child's message is often perfectly fine; it's the delivery that isn't helpful. Since these moments arise multiple times every day, they offer countless opportunities to help children learn attunement: sensing the right time to speak and the right way to say something. Kim frames this as tuning an instrument, and notes that a sense of timing and tone will serve children well in friendships, at school, and crucially in their future adult lives.

In this episode, Kim John Payne addresses one of the more difficult themes parents face: a child's growing awareness of life and death. He explains that very young children experience only a little separation between themselves and the world, but as consciousness shifts and they move into the big-child world, questions about mortality naturally arise. This awakening often appears in play, and sometimes in statements that shock parents to the core, like "I wish I was dead" or "I wish I'd never been born."

In this episode, Kim John Payne reflects on something elusive but essential: the space between parent and child. He describes this space as being alive, not a void to be filled with words or busyness, but a conduit through which care, love, and presence flow. When we're in sync with a child, there's a current moving between us, sometimes calm and easy, sometimes turbulent, but always communicating something.
