Gypsy Rose, Sandra Birchmore and Lori Vallow's Niece: Who Saw This Coming?

The DeFeos bought 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, in June 1965, with Louise's father's money. They put a sign in the yard that said High Hopes. Nine years later, on November 13, 1974, the eldest son fired eight rifle shots inside that house and killed everyone in it. Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. was twenty-three. His father was a big man who used his size on his wife. His mother wanted to put her head in the oven. She told the cleaning woman to prepare herself for something terrible, and she was right. Before that night, Butch had put a loaded shotgun on his father and pulled the trigger. The gun didn't fire, and nobody called the police. His father's response was to keep giving him things — speedboats, cars, a job at the family dealership. In October 1974, the dealership sent Butch to the bank with twenty thousand dollars. Matthew Farwell's defense spent October 23rd arguing Sandra Birchmore took her own life, using her own words against her. Robin Dreeke and I go through what they used and what they left out. Farwell's lawyer put up Sandra's 2020 Facebook message to her best friend, "I kind of want to just KMS," and got her therapist to agree the first weeks on an antidepressant carry risk. Sandra was two weeks into Zoloft. But the same therapist says she screened Sandra at every session for five years and never heard a suicidal thought. Sandra told her she was worried about her own apartment the day before she died, and her texts say Farwell had asked for a key and looked around her place eight days earlier. Nicholas Godejohn met Gypsy Rose Blanchard on a Christian dating site around 2012. She used an alter ego. He had his own. Over the next three years, their messages moved from romance to logistics — pregnancy, poison, arson, and a gun were discussed and discarded before Gypsy stole a knife from Walmart. On June 9, 2015, she painted her nails, texted him to bring his "A game," and unlocked the front door. He walked in at 1 a.m. Hours later, a post went up on Dee Dee's own Facebook account announcing she was dead. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. Gypsy Rose's account of Ken Urker's death has moved, and the evidence hasn't. Soon after he was found dead on October 1st, she told People he likely overdosed and she didn't know if it was on purpose. In her updated Kenan's Law petition three weeks later, she says she's 100 percent sure it wasn't suicide, while admitting the cause is still pending toxicology. The Lafourche Parish sheriff's report describes a gun in a holster on his nightstand, two shot glasses, a syringe, and syringes with a brown powder in the bathroom, and his face and arms were blue. Robin Dreeke and I ask whether that scene reads one way or looks too placed, and why Gypsy wants a federal law built on bullying claims when what people said about Ken was about the letters he wrote her years ago. Matthew Farwell's defense leans on Sandra Birchmore's 2021 suicide ruling, and on October 26, 2026, the doctor who made it answered both sides at his federal trial in Boston. Defense attorney Kimberly Stevens took her through a 2024 meeting with the FBI, federal prosecutors and State Police, where a forensic expert working with federal investigators shared a different opinion. The defense argues federal pressure changed her ruling to undetermined, and she testified she wasn't pressured. Stevens also raised Sandra's search for the color of the suicide ribbon on the day she died. An FBI agent testified earlier that on that same day, Sandra looked up baby names and an EMT training course. The doctor told jurors she works for neither side, and she still won't call the death a homicide. I walk through both accounts, including what she told prosecutors about whether she was ever asked to consider homicide. Farwell has pleaded not guilty.
