106 - Great Partnership Between Churches and Christian Schools | Polly Butterworth
The Effective Ministry PodcastShow Notes
Rev. Polly Butterworth, a Sydney high school chaplain, shares about her new role as Schools Ministry Development Officer for the Sydney Anglican Diocese, created to better support Anglican school ministry workers. She outlines five aims: pastoral support and mentoring networks for chaplains, strengthening partnerships between schools and churches, improving training and recruitment pathways for chaplains and Christian studies teachers, sharing resources across schools, and supporting professional development through the Sydney Anglican Schools Ministry Association. Polly explains why school–church partnership matters for long-term discipleship beyond school and discusses key barriers (especially time, mismatched schedules, and lack of ideas). She offers practical partnership ideas such as sharing speakers, prayer support and prayer points, church involvement in lunchtime groups and Bible studies, shared events, and cross-promotion, encouraging perseverance and patient, prayerful support. 00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro 02:05 Polly’s New Diocese Role 02:52 Five Goals for Chaplain Support 04:32 Sharing Resources and PD Network 08:27 How the Role Came About 13:26 Polly’s Path into Chaplaincy 16:58 Vision for School Church Partnerships 21:20 Schools as a Temporary Faith Community 22:46 Church Discipleship Depth 23:43 Why Partnership Matters 24:41 Survey Shows Willingness 25:47 Time And Scheduling Barriers 27:04 Making Space For Partnership 28:45 Idea Fatigue And Brainstorming 30:53 Practical Partnership Ideas 35:28 Shared Events And Promotion 37:01 When Efforts Stall 41:54 How Churches Can Support 45:00 Contact And Wrap Up Connect with Youthworks Click through to discover more about the Youthworks Ministry Support Team and how Youthworks can help you have an effective youth and children's ministry in your local church, or check out our Facebook Page . New Creation Kids: A Principle-Led, Bible-Centered Children’s Ministry Curriculum
Al James speaks with Katie Stringer, a high school SRE teacher and Inner West coordinator, about why SRE matters and how to grow it across schools and year groups. Katie describes coordinating a diverse volunteer team to provide SRE classes, seminars, and lunchtime groups, driven by a conviction that every student should have access to the stories of Jesus and the Bible within the curriculum. They discuss practical growth strategies: regularly asking “How can we get more SRE?”, partnering with local churches and the regional SRE advisor, delivering excellent lessons using the Think Faith curriculum, building consistent coverage through teams with teachers and helpers, and using “novelty” via Easter/Christmas (and other) seminars to raise SRE’s profile. They also cover addressing common issues like irregular timetabling below the 1,200-minute minimum and low attendance of students on the roll by working with principals to align with school procedures. 00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro 00:40 Katie Role and Vision 02:47 Why SRE Matters 04:46 Katie Journey Into SRE 07:55 Meet the Volunteer Team 11:58 Growing SRE Big Picture 13:32 From Zero to One 17:10 Why Year 11 and 12 20:11 Expand to Nearby Schools 22:17 Local Context Advantage 22:55 Excellent Bible Curriculum 23:59 Consistency Game Time Mindset 25:55 Why Four Touchpoints Matter 29:02 Teamwork Teacher And Helper 33:22 Recruitment Pipeline Capacity 35:32 Novelty Christmas Easter Seminars 42:36 Fixing Minutes And Attendance 45:57 Team Sport Final Encouragement
In this post–House Conference Q&A episode of the Effective Ministry Podcast, Al James reunites paper presenters Mike Dicker (Fit for Purpose: Contextualization in Children's and Youth Ministry) and Derek Brotherson (How Far is Too Far? Contextualization versus Syncretism in Youth and Children's Ministry) to revisit unanswered conference questions on contextualization. They discuss conference highlights, define contextualization against relativism and syncretism, and explain why contextualization is a method or lens rather than a prescriptive “supermodel” for ministry. The conversation covers top-down versus bottom-up approaches, working within senior-minister-led models, who determines ministry principles, and the relationship between faithfulness, outcomes, and effectiveness without “ends justify means” pragmatism. They address removing unnecessary offense while preserving the offense of the cross, how far contextualization extends (even to individuals), and how to identify “cultural barnacles” through reflection, cross-cultural engagement, and humble Bible reading. In this House Conference 2026 lead-up episode on the theme “anchored and adaptable,” a Youthworks host interviews Sydney-area practitioners Toby, Sarah, and Luke about first impressions of two conference papers by Mike and Derek on a theology of contextualization in children’s and youth ministry. They emphasize there is no “silver bullet,” that context is always changing, and that leaders must thoughtfully adapt programs and curriculum while staying anchored in core principles. They discuss practical examples such as shifting from young-adult-led rosters to parent-led ministry, giving leaders permission to contextualize resources, and evaluating models like Godly Play with caution about relativism while learning from their strengths. A key diagnostic question highlighted is, “What vision of God, the gospel, and the Christian life will this practice cultivate?” They also explore outreach tensions, cultural blind spots, learning from other churches and mission partners, and discipling young people without forcing them into adult molds.
