The Importance of Atonement

The School of Life

Summary

Atonement, often viewed as an old-fashioned concept, is defined as the action of making amends for a wrong or injury. In contemporary society, the prevailing methods of addressing wrongs typically involve fines or imprisonment, which do not adequately address the everyday errors and lack of empathy that occur in daily life. The need for a more effective approach to atonement is highlighted, suggesting that inspiration can be drawn from religious practices, particularly those in Judaism.

The Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur, serves as a powerful model for addressing social conflicts. This solemn occasion requires individuals to reflect on their actions over the past year, identify those they have harmed, and seek genuine forgiveness. The communal aspect of this observance emphasizes the importance of acknowledging one's faults and the necessity of sincere apologies, fostering a culture of understanding and reconciliation.

The discussion advocates for a secular adoption of atonement practices, arguing that without a culture of regular confession and forgiveness, society risks perpetuating a false sense of perfection. It stresses the importance of recognizing human imperfection and the need for both offering and accepting apologies to facilitate social harmony and personal growth.

The idea of ‘atonement’ sounds very old-fashioned and is deeply rooted in religious tradition. To atone means, in essence, to acknowledge one’s capacity for wrongness and one’s readiness for apology and desire for change. It’s a concept that every society needs at its center. It means, according to the dictionary, the action of making amends for a wrong or injury and, especially in religious contexts, reparation or expiation for sin. The modern world chiefly believes that the rightful way to amend for a wrong is either to pay a fine or go to prison. These are, in certain circumstances, surely the best moves – but they fail to deal with what is, in the end, the far largest category of wrongs that humans commit: instances of everyday nastiness, error, foolishness, lack of empathy and shortsightedness. Fining or imprisoning on a mass scale is not realistic here and yet, leaving the wrongs unaddressed seems not quite right either. We need a procedure for atonement that is both real and functions outside of the judicial system…”You can read more on this and other subjects here: https://goo.gl/D9bsxVMORE SCHOOL OF LIFEWatch more films on RELATIONSHIPS in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLrelationshipsSOCIAL MEDIAFeel free to follow us at the links below:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ X: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITSProduced in collaboration with: Mike Boothhttps://www.youtube.com/somegreybloke #TheSchoolOfLife Learn more about your ad choices. Part of the pain of growing older is that we can start to see how much, at certain points, we misunderstood ourselves, what the costs of missing self-knowledge were and how beautiful it could be if we could just build ourselves a time machine and go back and correct all our mistakes.
