The Fox Sisters: The Imposters Who Helped Establish Spiritualism
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
The Fox sisters, Maggie and Kate, are credited with founding the spiritualism movement in the mid-19th century, a belief system that posits communication with the spirits of the deceased. The sisters, raised in Hydesville, New York, began claiming their home was haunted in 1848, reporting mysterious rapping sounds that they later used to convince others of their ability to communicate with the dead. Their claims quickly gained traction, leading to their rise as prominent figures in spiritualism, attracting both believers and skeptics.
As the movement grew, the sisters conducted numerous séances, drawing large crowds and even attracting the attention of influential figures, including the abolitionist Isaac Post. However, their success was marred by internal strife and personal struggles, including alcoholism. In 1888, Maggie publicly confessed that their entire career had been a fraud, revealing that the rapping sounds were produced by cracking their joints. Despite her confession, the sisters continued to have a lasting impact on spiritualism, with many followers refusing to accept their claims of deception.
The legacy of the Fox sisters endures, as spiritualism remains practiced today, with mediums continuing to attract both skepticism and belief. Their story highlights the complex interplay between faith, deception, and the human desire for connection with the afterlife, illustrating how the quest for understanding the unknown can lead to both profound belief and profound disillusionment.

The Fox Sisters: The Frauds Who Helped Found Spiritualism

---
As the spiritualist movement grew, an argument began over whether it was heretical. Proponents argued that if one believed in angels, devils, and life after death, all part of Christian dogma, one must necessarily believe in the existence of the immortal soul. Spiritualism was the art of contact with part of that immortal soul, and was thus neither witchcraft nor heresy. Why some possessed the ability while others did not was a subject of debate. Later arguments against spiritualism were based on science, rather than Biblical verses. Whether some humans possess the ability to communicate with the dead is an argument which still rages, and countless mediums still practice it today.
