Summary
A recent discussion highlights the potential for a supernova event in our galaxy, focusing on the star Betelgeuse, which is nearing the end of its life cycle. Betelgeuse, located approximately 640 light years away, has exhibited fluctuations in brightness, raising curiosity about its fate. While it is unlikely to pose a threat to Earth, the star's eventual supernova could be a spectacular sight for future generations.
The conversation delves into the mechanics of supernovae, explaining the differences between types, particularly Type II supernovae, which occur when massive stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and collapse. The aftermath of such explosions can have significant implications for nearby celestial bodies, including potential impacts on Earth's ozone layer if a supernova occurs within 15 to 20 light years. Current estimates suggest that the next observable supernova could happen within a few hundred million years, with a historical frequency of supernovae occurring in the Milky Way every 50 years.
Additionally, the discussion touches on the ancient supernova that occurred around 2.7 million years ago, which may have influenced Earth's climate and contributed to significant extinction events. As scientists continue to monitor the cosmos, the likelihood of a nearby supernova remains low for the foreseeable future, allowing humanity to enjoy a relatively stable period in terms of stellar explosions.

The deaths of massive stars results in one of the most beautiful and violent events in the universe: the supernova. They are so luminous we can see them here on Earth and historical records show that we can even see them into the day. But supernovas release deadly and violent radiation that could destroy our atmosphere. So how far away do these supernova have to be for humanity to be safe? And when will the next supernova occur

But in fact much of our technological world depends on our understanding of the quantum properties of the subatomic universe. And soon, perhaps very soon, we’ll be interacting with the weirdness of quantum mechanics even more directly – with the coming of quantum computing and the quantum internet. Quantum computing is a topic that’s that has been well covered, so we’re going to be talking about the quantum internet. Specifically quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution – the foundations of the prospective quantum internet. We may come back to quantum computer in detail – but for now let me show you why their advent will demand a quantum internet. The entropy of the universe must always increase – so says the second law of thermodynamics. It’s a law that seems emergent from deeper laws – it’s statistical in nature – and yet may ultimately be more fundamental and unavoidable than any other law of physics. Subtle clues are emerging that the accepted model for the nature of dark energy and dark matter may not be all that. We saw the first such clue recently in our recent episode on the Crisis in Cosmology. Today we’re doing a Space Time Journal Club to reveal another clue. We’re looking at a new paper in Nature Astronomy, “Cosmological constraints from the Hubble diagram of quasars at high redshifts” by Risaliti and Lusso. It hints that the cosmological constant may not be so constant after all. In fact it may be increasing. If this is true, then our prediction for the future of our universe looks VERY different, and may involve the entire universe tearing itself to shreds at the subatomic level in the Big Rip.On this edition of Space Time Journal Club we look at:Risaliti and Lusso (2019) "Cosmological Constraints from the Hubble Diagram of Quasars at High Redshifts"https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-018-0657-z#darkenergy #darkmatter #spacetimeMore about The Great Courses Plus: The Great Courses Plus is currently available to watch through a web browser to almost anyone in the world and optimized for the US, UK, and Australian markets. The very, very long story short is that the universe ends in heat death, as it approaches maximum entropy, and its eternal exponential expansion drives it to effective utter emptiness and absolute cold. But new calculations have revealed we may be able to look forward to one last source of astrophysical cataclysms - a new type of supernova that can only happen at the end of the universe.
