Why Is 1/137 One of the Biggest Unsolved Mysteries In Physics?

PBS Space Time

Summary

The fine structure constant, a fundamental number in quantum physics, captivates physicists due to its mysterious nature and ubiquitous presence in various physical equations. Designated as approximately 1 over 137, this dimensionless constant plays a crucial role in defining the strength of electromagnetic interactions. Its significance was first highlighted by Arnold Sommerfeld in the early 20th century when he discovered that discrepancies in spectral lines could be explained by incorporating this constant alongside other fundamental quantities.

Despite its importance, the underlying reason for the fine structure constant's specific value remains elusive. It appears in numerous equations across physics, suggesting a deeper relationship between fundamental constants. The constant's dimensionless nature sets it apart from others, as it can be understood universally without the need for specific units of measurement. This raises intriguing questions about its role in the fabric of the universe and whether it signifies a connection between various physical laws.

The fine structure constant also exhibits variability, changing with the energy of interactions, which complicates its interpretation. Some physicists speculate that its value was randomly set during the Big Bang, while others propose that it may represent a relationship between relationships, hinting at a common mechanism that governs the fundamental constants. Richard Feynman famously described it as one of the greatest mysteries in physics, suggesting that understanding this number could unlock deeper insights into the universe's structure and the laws that govern it.

The Fine Structure Constant is one the strangest numbers in all of physics. It’s the job of physicists to worry about numbers, but there’s one number that physicists have stressed about more than any other. That number is 0.00729735256 - approximately 1/137. This is the fine structure constant, and it appears everywhere in our equations of quantum physics, and we’re still trying to figure out why.

(2018)https://go.nature.com/2A9FncQLast year a visitor came to our inner solar system. To us it looked like a faint spot of light, moving quickly relative to the fixed stars. We’d seen similar things countless times before – lonely rocks, remnants from the formation of our solar system, drifting on their endless orbits around the sun and faintly glimmering with its reflected light. Nothing unusual about such asteroids and comets, but what made this object special was its trajectory. It was not in orbit around the Sun at all. Rather, it appeared to have fallen in from interstellar space, and was on its way back out again. The object is 1I/2017 U1, better known as ‘Oumuamua. It’s the first chunk of interstellar space debris we’ve ever spotted passing through our solar system. It caused a justifiable stir at the time. Hell, WE even did an episode on it.Special thanks to our Patreon Big Bang, Quasar and Hypernova Supporters: Big BangDavid NicklasCoolAsCatsAnton LifshitsFabrice EapJustin LloydJuan BenetQuasarTambe BarsbayMark RosenthalDean FuquaJames FlowersVinnie FalcoHypernovaChuck ZegarJordan YoungJoseph SalomoneJohn HofmannMartha HuntMatthew O’ConnorRatfeastBrent MullinsDonal BotkinEdmund FokschanerMax LevineThanks to our Patreon Gamma Ray Burst Supporters: Alexander RodriguezAlexey EromenkoBrandon CookBrandon LabonteDaniel LyonsDavid CraneFabian OlesenFauzan ArdhanaGreg AllenGreg WeissJack FroschJames HughesJJ BagnellJon FolksJoseph EmisonJosh ThomasKevin WarneMalte UblMark VasileNathan LenizNicholas RoseNick VirtueScott GossettShannan CatalanoShawn AzmanTommy Mogensenسلطان الخليفي Learn more about your ad choices.
