RECENT EVIDENCE: Earth Had Rings (and Might Reclaim Them)

PBS Space Time

Summary

Recent research suggests that Earth may have once had a ring system, similar to those of Saturn, based on a study from Monash University. This hypothesis stems from an analysis of meteorite influx patterns during the Ordovician period, around 466 million years ago, when a significant spike in L-chondrite meteorites was observed. Researchers propose that a large asteroid passed close to Earth, disrupting its structure and creating a cloud of debris that was captured by Earth's gravity, forming a temporary ring system.

The study highlights that the distribution of impact craters from this era aligns with the expected location of a ring, primarily near the equator. The researchers calculated that the likelihood of such a concentration of impacts occurring randomly across the globe is exceedingly low, suggesting that the meteorites likely originated from a localized ring rather than the asteroid belt. This potential ring could have influenced Earth's climate, possibly contributing to the onset of glaciation by acting as a sunshade.

While the evidence is compelling, the researchers acknowledge that further investigation is needed to confirm this hypothesis. They suggest finding additional impact craters from the same period and analyzing their locations and meteorite types to strengthen their case. If proven true, this discovery could reshape our understanding of Earth's geological history and its capacity to develop a ring system in the future.

Planet Earth is the jewel of the solar system—the shimmery blue oceans, the verdant green forests, the wispy whimsical cloud formations. Saturn is the only competitor for most gorgeous planet with that giant ring system. Hmm… what if we could put the jewel of the Earth in its own ring? Then no contest. Well, there’s an extremely good chance that Earth once DID have a ring system. At least, that’s the proposal by a recent study that has evidence that a mysterious burst in meteor activity nearly half a billion years ago was actually caused by that ancient ring system collapsing onto the Earth. And, you know, if we had a ring once maybe we can have one again.

But what if you don’t know those internal interaction forces? Heisenberg sought a way to ignore that internal structure and, rather, treat the S-matrix as fundamental. The S-matrix was to become the physics of the interaction, rather than an emergent property of more fundamental, internal physics. Heisenberg’s made some progress in the 40s, but the approach came into its own 20 years later when the atomic nucleus refused to give up its mysteries. Our laws of physics are equations of motion, along with some associated constants. Previously we’ve talked a bit about the symmetries of these equations, and how they lead us to conserved quantities. But this is just the tip of the theoretical iceberg - sometimes investigating the symmetries of these equations predicts entirely new physics. The most remarkable example of this is the standard model of particle physics. You know, the most accurate physical theory in all of human history. Weyl had tried to explain electromagnetism by imposing on Einstein’s general theory of relativity very first gauge symmetry, Weyl invariance. Einstein pointed out it the proposal led to some absurd results, and so the idea went down in flames. It just couldn’t be true, despite the elegance of the math. But sometimes it can be hard to let go of the sense that a beautiful theory must be right.
