Summary
The trial of Matthew Farwell, charged with the murder of Sandra Birchmore, continues to unfold with significant testimony from his twin brother, William Farwell. During his court appearance, William revealed troubling text exchanges with Sandra, who disclosed her age and the nature of her relationship with Matthew. William's responses to Sandra's revelations have drawn scrutiny, particularly a text in which he simply replied "Nice" to her claim of being with Matthew at a young age.
William testified under immunity, which prevents him from being charged for any admissions made during his testimony. He recounted his interactions with Sandra and Matthew, including a night in January 2021 when he visited Sandra's apartment. He admitted to being intoxicated and unable to recall the events of that evening. The prosecution is building a case that Matthew strangled Sandra to prevent her from disclosing their relationship and her pregnancy to authorities.
Medical experts have testified about the nature of Sandra's death, indicating that the injuries sustained were inconsistent with a suicide. The prosecution argues that the evidence suggests she was murdered, while the defense contends that she may have taken her own life. The case raises questions about the conduct of law enforcement and the implications of familial ties in the investigation, as both brothers are entangled in a web of allegations and legal complications. The trial is expected to continue with further witness testimonies and expert analyses.
Show Notes
Matthew Farwell's twin brother William told a federal jury on October 27th what he thought of his brother when Sandra Birchmore said she was 15 the first time they were together. William testified that in December 2020, Sandra told him she was pregnant and believed the baby was Matthew's. Five days after he texted her that visiting the baby was a horrible idea, he was parked outside her building after a night at a bar, and he says he blacked out. On October 22nd, the defense raised that the state lab's DNA statistics for the strap never factored in a twin, to leave jurors unsure whose DNA it is. The lab's analyst told prosecutors a fraternal twin is no different from any other brother. Matthew Farwell is charged with killing Sandra and her unborn child, and he has pleaded not guilty. The government expects to rest October 28th. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? More from The Murder Of Sandra Birchmore
William Farwell testified with immunity at his twin Matthew's federal murder trial on October 26th and 27th, and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins me on the man behind that testimony. In May 2019, Sandra Birchmore texted William that Matthew first slept with her when she was 15. William was a Stoughton officer, married, and seeing Sandra himself, including in his patrol car on duty. He asked for immunity because he could be charged for that. He told State Police he last saw her in December, but he now says he drove to her apartment drunk in January and blacked out. The state's police certification board accused him of giving investigators false information, and he gave up his certification. Prosecutors say Matthew strangled a pregnant Sandra and made it look like a suicide, and he has pleaded not guilty. Sandra Birchmore spent the evening of February 1st, 2021, on her phone, the way her friends say she always did. Prosecutors say she sent or received almost 600 texts that day, and that between 8 and 9 p.m. she was searching baby shower venues and children’s furniture. At 9:07, Matthew Farwell asked if he could come by for a second, and she told him he could come say hi and asked if he was okay. A few minutes later she sent the last text of her life, and the government’s final witness testified her phone locked that same minute. Farwell walked in at 9:14 and out at 9:43. Calls and messages kept coming until her battery died on February 3rd, and Sandra was found the next day. On October 28th, Farwell’s lawyers asked Judge Denise Casper to end the case, arguing Sandra was never a federal witness, and she refused. Hear the last reason she gave. Investigators say messages put William Farwell outside Sandra Birchmore's building after midnight on January 10, 2021, about three weeks before she died. On October 26, Matthew Farwell's twin testified for the prosecution under immunity and admitted being intimate with Sandra while he was a Stoughton officer on duty. He testified the relationship began in 2018, when she was an adult. The same day, Sandra's medical examiner testified the paperwork police sent with her body had already ruled out foul play. Farwell's lawyers say federal prosecutors pressured her to change her suicide ruling, which prosecutors call premature. Timothy Hudson must decide by January 15, 2027, whether to plead guilty in the death of his stepsister, Anna Kepner. Bryan Kohberger's judge cleared every hearing date the night before a hearing on Kohberger's claim that the judge is biased. Defense attorney Bob Motta and former FBI agent Robin Dreeke join me to weigh what William's testimony does to his brother's case. In the Matthew Farwell trial, Sandra Birchmore's medical examiner testified that police intake materials described multiple antidepressants, but only one was logged. Dr. María del Mar Capó-Martínez said the police paperwork she was handed had already ruled out foul play and pointed to suicide before the autopsy. She testified her office wasn't called to the apartment, and she had no information about a broken necklace at the time of the examination. The biological evidence kit was requested three weeks after the autopsy, according to her testimony. Her original manner-of-death ruling was suicide, and in April 2026 she switched it to undetermined. Prosecutors blame misinformation for a premature first ruling, and Farwell's side says pressure from federal prosecutors drove the change. Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI special agent, and defense lawyer Bob Motta help me work through what investigators would have had to do if that first ruling had come back undetermined in 2021. On October 23rd, Matthew Farwell's lawyer used Sandra Birchmore's own words to tell a jury she took her own life: a 2020 Facebook message, notes of a depressed mood, the medicine she'd just started. Her therapist answered that Sandra was worried about her apartment the day before she died, eight days after texting that Farwell asked for a key and looked in her closet. Robin Dreeke and I put Sandra's case next to two others. Gypsy Rose says she's sure Ken Urker's death wasn't suicide, before toxicology is back. Lori Vallow's niece Melani says she knew nothing about the shot at Brandon Boudreaux, though a filing says she believed he had to die for the Lord's plan. Sandra's trial resumes Monday, October 26th.
