Dr. Laureen Lawlor-Smith - 'Cholesterol and the Low Carbohydrate/Ketogenic Lifestyle'
Low Carb Down UnderSummary
Cholesterol, a vital fat essential for human existence, is often at the center of controversy, particularly within low-carb and ketogenic diet discussions. It plays critical roles in cell membrane structure, brain health, and the production of hormones and bile acids. Despite its importance, misconceptions about cholesterol persist, particularly regarding its relationship with heart disease. Research indicates that while high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol are traditionally labeled as "bad" and linked to increased heart attack risk, many individuals who experience heart attacks have normal LDL levels. This raises questions about the simplistic view that lowering LDL cholesterol is the primary method for preventing heart disease.
Recent studies reveal a more nuanced understanding of cholesterol and heart health. For instance, a significant percentage of heart attack patients have normal LDL levels, suggesting that factors such as small, dense LDL particles, which are more harmful, play a crucial role. Additionally, the relationship between cholesterol levels and mortality exhibits a U-shaped curve, indicating that both very low and very high cholesterol levels can increase the risk of death. This challenges the prevailing medical narrative that emphasizes aggressively lowering LDL cholesterol without considering individual risk factors and overall health.
The discussion also highlights the impact of lifestyle changes, particularly low-carbohydrate diets, on cardiovascular health. Such diets often improve various risk factors associated with heart disease, including blood sugar levels and inflammation, while the effects on LDL cholesterol can vary. A case study of a patient named Kate illustrates the complexities of cholesterol management. After successfully reversing her diabetes and improving other health markers, her LDL cholesterol increased, prompting concerns from her healthcare provider. However, further analysis revealed that her LDL particles were predominantly large and buoyant, indicating a lower risk for heart disease.
Ultimately, the conversation around cholesterol emphasizes the importance of personalized healthcare and informed decision-making. It advocates for a more comprehensive approach to understanding cardiovascular risk, moving beyond the traditional focus on cholesterol levels alone.

Dave Feldman is a senior software engineer, business developer and entrepreneur. He began a Low Carb, High Fat diet in April 2015 and after experiencing a significant rise in his total cholesterol he committed himself to learning everything he could about cholesterol and the lipid system. As an engineer, Dave spotted a pattern in the lipid system that’s very similar to distributed objects in networks. Through research and N=1 experimentation he has revealed some very powerful data which he shares in this presentation and in further detail on his website; www.CholesterolCode.comA .pdf version of the slides used in this presentation is available here; http://denversdietdoctor.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/David-Feldmen-The-Dynamic-Influence-of-a-High-Fat-Diet-on-cholesterol-variability.pdf Learn more about your ad choices. Dr Anthony Chaffee is an American medical doctor specialising in Neurosurgery who over a span of 20 years has researched the optimal nutritional habits for athletic performance and health. It is his assertion that most of the so-called chronic diseases that doctors treat these days are actually caused by the food we eat, or don’t eat, and can in many cases be reversed easily with dietary changes.Dr. Chaffee began his University education studying Molecular & Cellular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 15, which culminated in attaining his MD from the Royal College of Surgeons.Dr. Chaffee is an All-American rugby player and a former professional athlete in England and America, having taken several years off from his education for the pursuit of sports between his undergraduate degree and medical school. Throughout his athletic career he saw first hand the monumental difference that diet makes to performance and recovery.Dr. Chaffee almost accidentally came across and practiced a fully carnivorous diet from age 20 to 25, having first learned of the toxic nature of plants during his University education. Since then he has rediscovered this truth and more and has dedicated many years and a large part of his professional practice to the study and education of diet and nutrition. He personally practices a fully carnivorous diet and currently resides in Perth, Australia where he does private consultations and clinics in functional medicine and nutrition. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Dr Penny Figtree graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 with first class honours. With over 20 years in general practice she has now decided to focus on weight loss and diabetes. This decision was made after seeing the power of a low carbohydrate diet to help people lose weight and for some to even reverse diabetes. Dr Figtree had previously tried to help patients using various diets such as low fat diets, Optifast, the 5:2 fast but nothing really worked. In the end she would just say “as long as you are not gaining weight then that’s great”. Then Dr. Figtree read a book called “Always Hungry” By Professor David Ludwig where he explained the INSULIN CARBOHYDRATE MODEL OF OBESITY.Dr. Figtree has now been practising low carb medicine for several years. She describes this as the most rewarding part of her career, stopping medications and patients feeling well. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon.
