#17 How to Recognize The Difference Between Obligation Sex, Generosity, and What is For You

Show Notes

In this episode, I’m answering a listener question: How do you tell the difference between sex that’s coming from true generosity and sex that’s actually coming from feelings of obligation, people-pleasing, or self-abandonment? I talk about why it’s normal to question this (especially in long-term relationships), and why the first step is to have grace for yourself. Then you can begin noticing where you’re not being completely honest with yourself. I also discuss how stress, resentment, emotional disconnection, and unspoken needs can quietly show up as “low desire” or obligation sex, when the deeper story is that something inside you needs to be heard. We get into how to check in with your body, what to ask yourself, and how to start gentle, real conversations with your partner. This is a reminder that you and your sexuality are allowed to evolve and you don’t need to shame yourself for where you’ve been. In this episode:

The difference between generosity and obligation in your sex life

How to notice when you’re saying “yes” while your body is saying “I’m not sure”

Why changing your mind about what you like (or don’t like) isn't a problem

How emotional stress, feeling unseen, or over-responsible can look like low desire

Ways to start an honest conversation with your partner about what you actually want

Why “we’re sexually incompatible” is sometimes really a communication and self-trust issue

This week I'm sharing something I've been working on for years: The Intimate Self. It started as an online course I wrote and never released, and I've since pulled it apart and rebuilt it as a body of work, a series of articles you can read in any order, with no coursework or homework required. I talk about why I didn't want to call it "empowerment," why it isn't about tips and tricks, and why I'm writing the thing I wish I'd had as a young adult. It'something grounded, spiritual, and body-centered, focusing on helping you become someone who can figure out intimacy for yourself. Part 1 is complete and available for you to access. Key Themes:

This week I'm answering a listener question: "How do you deal with emotions when they feel uncontrollable?" I get into why the hardest emotions, like anger, shame, fear, jealousy, and grief, feel so out of control, and why gaining control has nothing to do with pushing them down, hiding them, or running from them. I talk about what it really means to feel an emotion all the way through, the healthy coping tools to lean on, and daily rituals to keep you steady while you process. I also talk about when it's time to bring in extra support like therapy, and why feeling a big emotion isn't a flaw. Key Themes:

I keep running into the same conversation lately - overhearing it, seeing it online, hearing it from clients. People saying they just don't have anything left to give to dating or relationships right now. This episode is me unpacking that from a few different angles: why recognizing your own capacity is actually healthy, why I don't think we have to have ourselves fully figured out before we can be in a relationship, and how much of this comes down to how overworked, overstimulated, and oversaturated our lives have become. I talk about the real cost of being constantly plugged in, what it actually takes to open up emotional space for connection, and how to tell the difference between protecting your energy and just staying closed off. I said the word "divorce" on Instagram last week and people had a lot of opinions. It was in the podcast episode too, but less opinions there. It's not a word I use lightly and this episode gets into why it carries so much weight and what it's like to be on the receiving end of everyone else's reactions to it. Which was perfect for October's Monthly Read: Strangers by Belle Burden, a memoir of marriage that's really about the unraveling of one. I talk about how much I saw myself in her story, the strange parallels between how people respond to divorce and how they responded when I had cancer, and why the real gift of a book like this is the reminder that you never actually know what someone else is carrying. Back from a wedding and settling back into my own routine, which taught me something I didn't expect: I'm not against routine, I just need it to be mine. I talk about getting back into running after two years away. It's not just about exercise, but creating an energy shift that I was craving. Then the thought that kept surfacing all week, the moment in a relationship when you know it's over but you haven't left yet. I went to a wedding and kept thinking about my own life and what that feeling is like, why it takes so many of us a while to get there, and how living through it has changed the way I show up for the people I work with.
