Sandra Birchmore, Anna Kepner and Bryan Kohberger: Whose Brother Got a Deal?

Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. died on March 12, 2021, forty-five years into six consecutive life sentences for killing his parents and four siblings at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville. In all that time, the story of who held the rifle never stopped changing. He started with a mob hitman. Within hours he confessed. He told detectives where to find the Marlin and the pillowcase full of spent shells, and then he asked about his father's life insurance. His defense lawyer tried insanity. On the witness stand, DeFeo told the jury: "I killed them all in self-defense." And: "When I got a gun in my hand, there's no doubt in my mind who I am. I am God." From prison he blamed his sister Dawn, said his mother had a gun, named friends who were never charged, and invented a wife and daughter who didn't exist. Every version fell apart. The powder on Dawn's nightgown put her near the muzzle. It never put her finger on the trigger. In the cruise ship murder case against Timothy Hudson, prosecutors say video shows him walking across the ship to throw his stepsister Anna Kepner's phone in a trash can. They say her phone went dead at 8:14 and never came back on. Prosecutors also cite surveillance footage and DNA. Hudson's lawyers call the evidence circumstantial. Hudson was 16 at the time of Anna's death in November 2025, and she was 18. He's pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in federal court, where he's being prosecuted as an adult. If he doesn't enter a plea by the judge's hard deadline of January 15, 2027, his trial opens January 25. Until one pending issue gets cleared up, his lawyers say, they can't counsel him either way. They called their own filing "purposefully vague." Robin Dreeke once led the FBI's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program. The July 4, 2025, livestream caught everything. Gypsy Rose Blanchard performed for the camera while Ken Urker sat visibly frustrated in the background. By then, a knife incident had already surfaced — Gypsy allegedly carved into Ken's headboard, smashed a framed photo, and scattered letters across the bedroom. In March 2026, she recorded a TikTok with a friend joking about murder. When prison recordings from 2020 and 2021 leaked in August — containing language that included a wish that Ken would overdose — the public saw someone different from the woman they'd welcomed home. Ken Urker was found dead on his thirty-fourth birthday, October 1, 2026. Drug paraphernalia and a holstered firearm were found at the scene. Gypsy Rose posted on Instagram thirteen days later. Bryan Kohberger told the court he was satisfied with his attorneys when he pleaded guilty in the Idaho 4 case in July 2025. A year later, he filed a post-conviction petition claiming those same attorneys coerced him. Judge Steven Hippler emptied the calendar on October 14, 2026. Kohberger's amended petition is due January 13, and witness and expert disclosures are due February 1. Latah County deputy prosecutor Keith Scholl wants the petition thrown out without a hearing, arguing it's bare and unsupported. He also says Kohberger's claim of innocence isn't one Idaho law recognizes. Kohberger's lead attorney, Anne Taylor, had asked Hippler for more time before the plea. Her sealed memo told the judge Kohberger could not rationally assess his case. Hippler denied the request, and the memo has since been ordered turned over to prosecutors. I ask defense lawyer Bob Motta and ex-FBI agent Robin Dreeke whether Taylor's memo helps Kohberger or proves she did her job. Matthew Farwell's twin brother William was a Stoughton cop when Sandra Birchmore told him she was 15 the first time she was with Matthew, and on October 27th he told a federal jury why he didn't believe her. William testified with immunity and said he asked his brother about it for the first time after Sandra was dead, and Matthew said no. Then Dr. Bill Smock, the government's strangulation expert, testified her death scene was altered, pointing to a broken neck bone, a clasp mark made while her heart was beating and a necklace snapped under the strap. Farwell's lawyer Joanne Daley countered that Smock isn't a forensic pathologist and that officers saw no signs of a struggle. Prosecutors say Farwell killed Sandra to keep her from going to federal investigators, and he has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers say they could rest as soon as November 4th.
