Transform Your Health by Optimizing Mitochondria, Bioelectricity, and Alkalinity | John Galamaga
The Signal with Jonathan JareckiShow Notes
In this episode, my guest is John Galamaga, a licensed massage therapist and certified personal trainer from the Cooper Institute in Dallas. He’s also a Senior Master Instructor in LAMAS QiGong, and a foremost expert in the field of health and wellness with over 40 years of experience. Today we discuss how to leverage movement, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors to enhance your overall health. John draws from his extensive experience to share personal stories and setbacks that led him to profound insights. After a health scare during a workout and unsatisfactory answers from his cardiologist, John, 20 years old at the time, sought alternative solutions with an open mind. His journey revealed that the traditional medical approach might not be the best path to a healthier lifestyle. Building on this, we explore why high-intensity training might not be the optimal route to better health and its effects on mitochondrial function. We then discuss science backed practices that enhance mitochondrial health, which have yet to emerge in the mainstream fitness world. We also discuss proper stretching techniques, the idea of a “one diet fits all” approach, ancient practices of Qigong and sungazing, electromagnetic therapy, and he challenges common misconceptions within the health space. We close the discussion with actionable steps and key takeaways to help you kickstart and further your health journey.

More from The Signal with Jonathan Jarecki
Cameron Borg, MSc, is a science writer and host of the Ricci Flow Nutrition Podcast, with a Master's degree in Medical Science majoring in Nutrition from The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he completed his thesis with the Zubarev lab on biological isotope fractionation. He explains that tissues across species appear to regulate their carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 content toward a preferred set point. This challenges ecology's long-held "static delta" assumption. He also explains how C4 sugars from corn and cane leave a detectable carbon-13 signature in human red blood cells, and why synthetic supplements may differ isotopically from natural forms. We also discuss the limits of the calorie in complex systems, the Energy Resistance Principle, questions about ATP's "high-energy" bond, and how shade, near-infrared light, and blue twilight shape the light signals your body receives. You'll come away with a systems-level view of nutrition and light, plus practical ideas for aligning your environmental signals. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Roger Seheult, MD, is a physician quadruple board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine, an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, an Assistant Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University, and the co-founder of MedCram. Today, he explains why vitamin D levels strongly predicted COVID-19 outcomes while vitamin D supplementation largely failed to reproduce the benefit, and makes the case that vitamin D is a marker for sunlight exposure rather than the primary mechanism behind it. He describes the near-infrared portion of sunlight which penetrates through the human body, and the hypothesis that it stimulates melatonin produced inside mitochondria, where it acts as a local antioxidant. We discuss randomized trials of infrared light in hospitalized and ICU patients, why greenery reflects infrared while concrete absorbs it, the Green Heart Louisville tree-planting trial, evidence that bright light at night predicts higher mortality, the NEWSTART framework, the Adventist Health Study, and published research on faith, forgiveness, and health.
In this episode, my guest is Dr. Sean Cain, PhD, a Harvard Medical School-trained expert in the impact of light on the human circadian system, a Matthew Flinders Professor at Flinders University, and Co-Founder and CEO of Circadian Health Innovations.
My guest is my mom, Rosebud, a mother of four who spent fifty years building a life around preventative medicine.
In this episode, my guest is Dr. Glen Jeffery, PhD, a professor of neuroscience at University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology and a leading expert on how light interacts with mitochondria to shape health and aging. Today, he discusses how red and near-infrared light penetrate deep into the body and improve mitochondrial function and overall health. We also discuss how detrimental modern indoor life has become and why expensive red light panels are likely unnecessary and possibly harmful. By the end, you'll understand sunlight as a biological input your body evolved to depend on and the low-cost, practical steps you can take to get more of it.
