The Axeman of New Orleans: The Killer Who Loved Jazz
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
The Axeman of New Orleans, an infamous serial killer, terrorized the city from 1918 to 1919, leaving a trail of gruesome murders and a chilling demand for jazz music. The spree began on May 23, 1918, with the brutal slaying of Joseph and Catherine Maggio, where the killer used an axe found in their backyard. The case quickly turned suspicious, particularly surrounding Andrew Maggio, Joseph's brother, who was present during the attack but claimed to have heard nothing. Despite initial suspicions, the investigation faltered, leading to a series of similar attacks that left the city in fear.
The Axeman's modus operandi included breaking into homes, attacking couples in their sleep, and using axes or other blunt instruments. Victims often shared a common background, primarily being Italian immigrants. The terror escalated with a letter from the Axeman, demanding that residents play jazz music on a specific night or face his wrath. The city responded en masse, resulting in a night filled with music and no reported murders, although the authenticity of the letter remains debated.
As the killings continued, police struggled to connect the dots, often focusing on individuals with ties to the victims rather than considering a serial killer. The Axeman's final known attack occurred in March 1919, after which he vanished without a trace. Despite numerous suspects, including Andrew Maggio and others, the true identity of the Axeman remains a mystery, solidifying his place as one of the most enigmatic figures in criminal history.
