Dr Thorndyke again. Several of you asked for more of him — and there are more.

Like The Case of Oscar Brodski, this is one of Freeman's inverted stories: you watch the crime planned first, and only afterwards see how it is taken apart.

It opens on a train pulling out of Maidstone, where a quiet gentleman finds a stranger settling into his first-class compartment. The stranger never forgets a face — and he has not forgotten this one.
