What If Dark Matter Is Just Black Holes?

PBS Space Time

Summary

The concept of dark matter, which constitutes about 80% of the universe's mass yet remains invisible, is explored through the intriguing hypothesis that it could be composed of black holes. While many researchers focus on detecting exotic particles or questioning Einstein's general relativity, the idea that black holes themselves might account for dark matter presents a simpler, yet compelling theory. This theory hinges on the notion that a significant number of black holes, particularly primordial black holes formed in the early universe, could be distributed throughout the cosmos in a manner consistent with dark matter's influence.

To validate this hypothesis, scientists examine the mass spectrum of black holes, ruling out various ranges based on observational data. For instance, supermassive black holes found at galaxy centers cannot contribute to dark matter as they would quickly sink to these centers. Similarly, smaller black holes would have evaporated over time, and those in the mass range of small asteroids would need to exist in such vast numbers that their interactions would create observable effects, which are not supported by current evidence.

Current studies suggest that black holes of certain masses, particularly those between the mass of a planet and several tens of solar masses, could potentially account for a fraction of dark matter. However, extensive surveys have largely ruled out these as major contributors. The ongoing quest to understand dark matter continues to point toward the possibility of new physics, as the search for its true nature remains unresolved.
