Show Notes

This mix is a recording from a recent event at the Civic Underground club in Sydney. It was the gloves off set for Mark Farina who had just done a four hour harbour boat party for Mushroom Jazz earlier that evening. I was asked if I wanted to do the closing set, and who would I wanted to go b2b with. Two names immediately came to mind, Ritmiq, a deep and minimal house DJ who I rate highly and iLLya Cooper a well known Sydney legend. In the end I went with iLLya, because of his long standing friendship with Mark, having played alongside him on many previous tours. A lot of people thought I was brave and a little crazy trying to play b2b with such a skilled DJ, but I wanted to be challenged. I had iLLya come onto my radio show a couple of days before the event to see how we could sound together. You can check out the show here. The atmosphere in the club was pretty special, the crowd was very knowledgable and a real mix of ages. Mark got them fired up good and proper and before we knew it, we were up. iLLya started our set off and played for the first 15 minutes. We then went back and forth for the next hour and a half. As you can hear iLLya drops acappellas and vocal hits all through the mix, scratching and chopping. It was a wild experience but so much fun. I dropped my latest track "London Nights" and was blown away by the response. Everything seemed to change on the dancefloor, different people were suddenly at the front of the dancefloor in front of me and they were giving it some. It felt amazing seeing people connect and enjoy something you have created. I really hope to get the chance to play b2b with iLLya again. A longer set would be magic as we were just getting into our stride. For anyone in Sydney you can catch me at Tatler tomorrow night where I have the whole night to myself!!! Four hour set where I can stretch my legs and play some incredible music from the last 35 years of house. The following Saturday (21st), I am back at the Civic again for Night Safari. I'll be picking up where I left off. Finally, on NYE I'll be playing for Boogie at the Ivy Ballroom supporting none other than DJ Spen and Dave Lee (Joey Negro)! It's been a great year for DJing out for me, fingers crossed that 2025 continues in the same direction.

Enjoy!

Another recording from a gig I played in Sydney. It was a new event for Night Safari on the rooftop at The Sheaf in Double Bay. Myself, Steve Mack and Tolga Diga were the DJs playing from 6pm to 1am. It had been a beautiful warm day and it stayed above 26 degrees for the whole event. Tolga opened up and got us underway. The mix starts with Tolga's last couple of tracks of his first set. Steve began his first set around the nine minute mark. My first set begins around the 30 minute mark with Detroit Swindle's Monkey Wrench. My first set was a pretty chilled affair on the soulful deep side. I mixed it up with tunes from the last 20+ years. Steve's second set starts around 1hr 35m. Towards the end of his set Steve played a few of his own productions, remixes of tracks you may recognise. He raised the tempo and intensity as he handed over for my final set which starts around 2hr 42m. Check out Steve's tracks on Soundcloud (https://on.soundcloud.com/4hO2bPZLi5Sfboj6av). I opened my second set with a classic from 94 that I'd heard Ellis Mia play in one of his reels the morning before (https://www.facebook.com/reel/1575656207638393). Memories came flooding back and I went hunting for it. Another DJ, Cameron in a Sydney DJ WhatsApp group I created had it on vinyl and ripped me a copy the afternoon of the gig. I couldn't wait to play it. If you haven't already I would recommend creating a chat group for DJs in your city to support each other. My second set is straight up house from the last 35 years, so much fun to play. Most of it was lost on the younger people in the crowd, but they gotta start somewhere! This recording ends towards the end of the set, you'll need to wait for pt2 to hear the rest along with Tolga's final set that took us through to close. We will be doing this gig on a monthly basis so look out for future recordings. For now sit back and enjoy our summer rooftop session.

For this weeks radio show I played my two VBW sets from 2018 and 2019 into one two hour show. I also finally got to fix a screw up from the 2019 set when I accidentally stopped the wrong deck on the first transition! I was mortified at the time and it took a few tracks to get out of my head and back into it. I also extended the end of the 2019 mix so the last track plays in full. Both mixes are very tight as I tried to cram as many tunes in each as possible. There are at least 35 tracks in this session as a result I reckon.

This is the recording of a set I recently played at Lilly's Bar in Brookvale on the Northern Beaches in Sydney. The first 40 minutes are the excellent Lili Joy who the bar is named after. It's actually a gin distillery and bar. The dancefloor has a really high ceiling and the walls are covered in barrels of gin! It's a heavier mix, only the first three tracks are soulful, the rest are deeeeep. ✊🏾

It's always nice to turn back the clock and cherry pick some of the tracks that defined a particular year. Surprising to hear how much the sound and style either has or hasn't evolved. This time we go back five years to 2011. Since this was recorded in April we stick to the first half of 2011. Auditioning tracks for the mix was tough, so much deep soulful quality from the likes of Atjazz, Maya Jane Coles and the Reel People label. Hopefully some of the tracks take you back to the not so distant past and refresh happy memories locked away and triggered by a song. This is a recording of the c2eMusic show on Pressure Radio on 28th April 2016.

A Masters At Work session. Sounds like such an obvious choice but i's 20 years since the last one! The previous two were both curated (to within an inch of their lives!) so the tunes were packed in with shorter transitions. This is a radio show session so tend to play the tracks in full, let them breath and be heard as intended. There are some tracks from the last two MAW Sessions but plenty of tunes that have come since, mainly from Louie. Plenty to sing along to, it's hard to go wrong with MAW, so much quality to chose from.
