Ex-Cop Matthew Farwell Would Face Prison With THIS Over His Head
True Crime Today | Daily True Crime News & InterviewsShow Notes
Prosecutors have rested their side of the Matthew Farwell trial. They argued the ex-Stoughton officer killed Sandra Birchmore during her pregnancy and staged her death as a suicide. His plea is not guilty. If convicted, he faces life, and federal prison has no parole. Instead of solitary, the feds put ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin in a unit for ex-cops, ex-gang members and other inmates deemed high-risk. Prosecutors allege a onetime gang leader in that unit stabbed him 22 times. In prison, the saying goes, the two worst things you can be are a cop and a man in a case like Farwell's. Prosecutors say it started when Sandra was 15 and Farwell, then 27, was teaching the police youth program she was in. Former prosecutor turned defense attorney Eric Faddis and ex-FBI behavioral program chief Robin Dreeke weigh what both would mean inside. On the defense’s first full day of witnesses, Farwell’s lawyers showed the jury a page Sandra Birchmore wrote in 2017. She’d listed reasons to end her life and reasons not to. Her ex-boyfriend William Kilroy identified something at the bottom of that page as his own handwriting. Kilroy told the jury Sandra was depressed after losing her mother and grandmother, talked about joining her grandmother, and later threatened to kill herself and put him in the note. The chief ME of Massachusetts also testified for the defense. Her office called Sandra’s death a suicide in 2021, then changed the ruling to undetermined in 2026. Prosecutors got Kilroy to agree Sandra was a fighter, resilient, and someone who always pulled through. They pointed out no note was ever found. A broken necklace from Sandra’s grandmother was around her neck in a police photo and never collected by investigators. Farwell faces mandatory life if convicted. The prosecution has rested in Matthew Farwell's trial, and its witnesses included the Sandra Birchmore medical examiner. Farwell, once a Stoughton detective, pleaded not guilty after the FBI arrested him in August 2024. The DA cited the medical examiner's May 2021 suicide ruling when he didn't bring charges. Under oath on October 26, 2026, she said outside agencies supply her information and that she never got asked if Sandra's death was suspicious. In the last six months of 2020, right before Sandra died, about 20 medical examiners in Massachusetts handled a caseload of more than 3,600. Their own report says most bodies get examined within a day of arriving. Defense lawyer and onetime prosecutor Eric Faddis joins me with Robin Dreeke, retired head of the FBI's behavioral program. We get into what a family can do when one ruling decides whether anyone keeps looking. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The prosecution has rested in the Matthew Farwell trial. The state says the former Stoughton detective strangled a pregnant Sandra Birchmore and disguised her death as a suicide, and Farwell's plea is not guilty. Prosecutors pointed to a goodbye note when pushing to keep him behind bars ahead of trial. The state says he wrote it to his best friend on June 24, 2024, wishing things had gone differently and asking the friend to watch over his wife. On the day Farwell handed troopers his personal phone, he ran searches on his police phone that jurors later saw. One asked whether you can take back consent in Massachusetts. Joining me are Eric Faddis, a former prosecutor who moved into defense work, and the FBI's retired behavioral chief Robin Dreeke. If the medical evidence won't settle it, can Farwell's own conduct carry a juror to guilty? In the full episode, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and retired FBI behavior chief Robin Dreeke dig into Melani Pawlowski, the niece who was calling Lori Vallow "Mom" as a grown woman with four kids. We cover the firesides Brandon Boudreaux says he wasn't welcome at, the recorded Rexburg calls where Lori called Melani and her new husband "powerful warriors on our team," and the custody fight after Lori's arrest. Shavaun then turns to William Farwell, the twin of former Stoughton detective Matthew Farwell. Sandra Birchmore texted William that she was 15 the first time Matthew slept with her, and William, a cop seeing her himself, did nothing. He later testified against his twin with immunity. Melani has never been charged in the shooting at Brandon and denies any part in it. Matthew Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Three children went into the house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville in December 1975, thirteen months after the DeFeo murders. They were five, seven, and ten. Twenty-eight days later the family left. Then their stepfather, George Lutz, and their mother put them into a book, a movie, and fifty years of other people's story. The book's cover said A True Story. Their own lawyer told a reporter they had made it up over wine. A federal judge said the book was largely fiction. Investigators found no snowfall for the hoof prints and no police records for the calls. The next owners found original hardware on a door supposedly torn from its hinges. George trademarked the words Amityville Horror and in 2003 sued his own stepson over the name. Christopher Quaratino said George had exaggerated the incidents to profit. His brother Daniel said George hit them. Their sister Missy was five when they moved in. She has never spoken publicly.
