Lysander: The SPARTAN who dominated ATHENS
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
Lysander, the Spartan general, emerges as a pivotal figure in the conclusion of the Peloponnesian War, which saw Sparta and Athens vie for dominance in the ancient Greek world. Born around 454 BC, Lysander's early life remains largely undocumented, but he rises to prominence during the war, particularly noted for his strategic acumen and political maneuvering. His relationship with Cyrus the Younger, the Persian prince, proves crucial as he secures Persian support for the Spartan fleet, which ultimately leads to a decisive victory against Athens at the Battle of Aegospotami in 405 BC.
Following this victory, Lysander plays a significant role in reshaping the political landscape of Greece, installing oligarchic governments in former Athenian territories. However, his ambitions lead to a swift downfall. The oligarchic regime he established in Athens collapses within months, and the restored democracy signals a shift in power dynamics. Additionally, Lysander's support for Cyrus in a bid for the Persian throne backfires when Cyrus is killed in battle, igniting hostilities with the new Persian king, Artaxerxes II.
Lysander's downfall culminates in 395 BC during a conflict with a coalition of former allies, including Thebes and Corinth. His tactical misjudgment leads to his death at the Battle of Haliartes, illustrating the perils of overreaching ambition in the volatile landscape of ancient Greek politics.
