In this minisode, Gary Zukav explores the choices shaping both individual lives and the transformation of the human species. He describes humanity standing between two worlds - gratitude, patience, and contentment on one side, anger, worry, and despair on the other - and explains that every choice is like walking through a door: once chosen, the others close, and new doors immediately appear.
Gary illustrates this with the story of Hakuin, a founder of Zen Buddhism, confronted by an armed samurai demanding to know if heaven and hell exist. Hakuin provoked the samurai’s fury, then calmly named the moment his sword began to leave its sheath “the gates of hell,” and the moment he sheathed it again “the gates of heaven” - showing that even ordinary moments are ongoing invitations to choose between the two.
The solution Gary offers: every interaction, however small, is a chance to choose awareness and love over fear - and intention is the key that determines which gate opens.

Embrace the Soul Step Challenge
Think of a recent moment when you felt triggered by something small - a comment, a tone, an unmet expectation. In that instant, which gate did you walk through? Before reacting next time, pause and ask: is a frightened part of my personality making this choice for me? What would it look like to choose the gate to heaven instead?

Every day brings a choice between two ways of living: one rooted in gratitude and contentment, the other in anger and despair. In this Soul Snack, Gary Zukav explains what comes after emotional awareness, once a painful or pleasing sensation has been noticed near an energy processing center like the throat, chest, or solar plexus.
In this Deepcast episode, Gary Zukav takes on one of humanity's oldest fears: the idea that evil is a force loose in the world, something separate from us that can attack, tempt, or possess us. He traces this belief back through Christianity and Buddhism, both built on the story of a young man (Jesus, Siddhartha) who faced temptation on his path to a higher state of being. In the old consciousness, that temptation gets treated as an outside enemy, an independently existing evil that only an institution like the church can help you defeat. Gary argues this framing has always been a trap, one that keeps people dependent and afraid instead of powerful.
