The Freeway Phantom: The Mysterious Killer Who Stalked the US Capital
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
The podcast delves into the chilling case of the "Freeway Phantom," a serial killer who terrorized Washington, D.C., in the early 1970s. The killer is believed to have abducted and murdered at least six young Black girls between 1971 and 1972, with victims ranging in age from 10 to 18. The investigation faced significant challenges, including racial bias and a lack of resources, which hampered police efforts to catch the perpetrator.
The first known victim, 13-year-old Carol Denise Spinks, disappeared on April 25, 1971, and her body was found days later, showing signs of sexual assault and strangulation. This marked the beginning of a series of similar murders, with the killer employing consistent methods, such as strangulation and the removal of victims' shoes. As the investigation progressed, police struggled to connect the dots, and the media eventually dubbed the murderer the "Freeway Phantom."
Despite numerous leads and the involvement of the FBI, the case went cold after the last confirmed murder in 1972. Various suspects emerged over the years, including a man named Robert Elwood Askins, who had a history of violence against women. However, no conclusive evidence linked him to the murders. The podcast highlights the ongoing mystery surrounding the Freeway Phantom, whose identity remains unknown, and the lasting impact of these tragic events on the victims' families and the community.
