The Bloody Truth Behind America's Ancient Anasazi | Native American Documentary | Timeline
Timeline - World History DocumentariesSummary
Recent investigations into the Anasazi civilization, known for their sophisticated architecture and peaceful farming practices, reveal a darker side marked by violence and cannibalism. Physical anthropologist Christy Turner has dedicated over three decades to studying skeletal remains from the American Southwest, challenging the long-held perception of the Anasazi as a utopian society. His research indicates that these ancient peoples may have engaged in brutal acts, including cannibalism, as evidenced by the analysis of bones showing signs of butchering and cooking.
Turner's findings suggest that the Anasazi were not only victims of violence but may have also participated in cannibalistic practices, particularly during a period of cultural influence from Mesoamerican societies. His rigorous forensic criteria for identifying cannibalism have led to significant discoveries, including the presence of human myoglobin in ancient feces, confirming that human remains were consumed. Despite the strong evidence, Turner's claims have sparked controversy, particularly among Native American tribes who view such assertions as dehumanizing and historically inaccurate.
The implications of Turner's research extend beyond the Anasazi, as it raises questions about the nature of violence in ancient societies and the role of cannibalism in cultural practices. As scientists continue to explore these findings, the narrative surrounding the Anasazi is being rewritten, revealing a complex interplay of peace, violence, and survival in a civilization that once thrived in the American Southwest.

Historian, Joann Fletcher explores the hitherto downplayed role that women took in the running of state and, indeed, in shaping every aspect of life in Ancient Egypt. Perhaps unassumed by most, the ancient Egyptians were unique in their attitude to sexual equality with women holding the title of 'Pharaoh' no fewer than 18 times, while there were also female doctors, tutors, prime ministers and priestesses. Focusing on women of royalty such as Pharaoh Hatshepsut and Queen Nefertari, as well as women of high profession such as Lady Peseshet, the earliest female doctor known to the world, Fletcher reveals an ancient civilization unparalleled in its sexual equality.
