PDB Afternoon Bulletin | October 28th, 2026: UN Sounds Alarm Over Iran’s Nuclear Stockpile & Bukele Sends Troops to Haiti
The President's Daily BriefSummary
The United Nations raises concerns about Iran's nuclear program, highlighting that inspectors cannot account for a significant quantity of highly enriched uranium. Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reports that approximately 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity remains unverified, potentially enough for ten nuclear weapons. This situation is exacerbated by military actions against Iran's nuclear facilities, which have damaged infrastructure but may not have destroyed the uranium itself. The IAEA's last estimate dates back to June 2025, and Iran has not allowed inspectors access to critical sites, complicating verification efforts.
In a separate development, El Salvador has deployed around 1,000 troops to Haiti in search of four missing servicemen, following President Nayib Bukele's ultimatum to gangs holding them. The servicemen, who were Air Force technicians, disappeared after an ambush on October 18. The U.S. is assisting with troop transport, and the Dominican Republic has offered logistical support. The situation in Haiti remains precarious, with gangs controlling much of the capital and contributing to widespread violence and displacement. The international force in Haiti is currently under-resourced, with the Salvadoran reinforcements significantly increasing its numbers.
