Do the Past and Future Exist?

PBS Space Time

Summary

Marketers are increasingly concerned about the effectiveness of their ad campaigns, with many calling out the phenomenon known as "bullspend." This term refers to the disparity between impressive dashboard metrics, such as impressions, and actual revenue generation. The discussion emphasizes the importance of focusing on tangible results rather than just reach, with LinkedIn being highlighted as a platform that delivers a high return on ad spend.

The conversation shifts to a philosophical exploration of time, delving into concepts such as determinism and the nature of consciousness. The hosts examine the idea that while we perceive the present as the only reality, physics suggests that the past and future may exist simultaneously in a "block universe." This perspective challenges traditional notions of time, proposing that all moments in time are equally real, and our experience of time is merely an illusion shaped by our consciousness.

The discussion further explores the implications of Einstein's theory of relativity, which complicates the understanding of simultaneity and the present. Observers moving at different speeds may perceive time differently, leading to varying definitions of the present. This complexity raises questions about the nature of reality and existence, suggesting that our understanding of time and consciousness is deeply intertwined with the fundamental laws of physics.

Is the past erased and the future a void yet to be filled? Well, the answer lies in between the past and the future - in the elusive, ever-moving eye-blink that we call the present. Butterflies, Rorschach tests, and classically attractive faces all look the same when flipped left-to-right. In physics, a symmetry is when the laws of physics are unchanged due to some transformation of coordinates. We’ve seen examples where it is - the universe is symmetric to coordinate shifts in space, time, and even the rather abstract phase of the wave function. So it might be surprising to learn that with all the weird ways in which the universe IS symmetric, it’s NOT entirely symmetric under this most intuitive one. The laws of physics work differently in the universe of the mirror.
