HIVE Digital secures $129M financing for Canadian sovereign AI infrastructure
Proactive - Interviews for investorsSummary
Hive Digital Technologies secures $129 million in financing to develop a sovereign AI infrastructure in Canada, marking a significant milestone for the company. Executive Chairman Frank Holmes emphasizes the importance of this achievement against a backdrop of skepticism in the neocloud sector, particularly in light of negative narratives surrounding debt structures in the industry. Despite challenges, Hive's team has remained focused and committed to scaling their AI business.
Holmes highlights the critical role of U.S. institutions in funding this initiative, noting that Canadian banks have been hesitant to lend for data center expansions. The financing will allow Hive to build tier one data centers and expand their operations significantly, with expectations of infrastructure readiness by late 2026. He stresses the necessity of maintaining sovereignty over Canadian data centers to avoid falling behind in technological advancements, especially as Canada has historically underinvested in technology and infrastructure compared to the U.S.
The conversation also touches on the potential for exporting compute power alongside gas resources, positioning Canada to leverage its natural resources for technological growth. Holmes expresses optimism about the future of AI infrastructure in Canada, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Carney, who has appointed an AI minister, signaling a proactive approach to the sector's development.

Hive Digital Technologies Executive Chairman Frank Holmes Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss a major financing agreement for the company’s subsidiary, BUZZ High Performance Computing (BUZZ HPC), which has secured an approximately $129 million credit facility to fund advanced AI computing infrastructure in Canada.
The company has entered into a Loan and Security Agreement with an institutional lender for a fixed-rate facility carrying an annual interest rate of 9% over a three-year term. Principal and interest will be amortized over the life of the loan.
The facility is secured by GPUs and related assets held by BUZZ Alpha Cloud, with additional support from a limited-recourse guarantee by BUZZ HPC and a pledge of BUZZ HPC’s equity interest in BUZZ Alpha Cloud. At the end of the three-year term, HIVE expects to own the GPUs outright, with no residual payment required.
Holmes told Proactive that the financing will support the purchase of an advanced sovereign AI GPU cluster and associated infrastructure, including NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 systems. The equipment is intended to support a three-year, fixed-term sovereign AI customer contract with Cohere that HIVE announced in June.
Delivery of the GB200 GPU systems is currently expected toward the end of the fourth quarter of 2026. The infrastructure will be deployed to keep computing capacity within Canadian borders, supporting the growing demand for domestic AI capabilities. BUZZ HPC believes this type of infrastructure can help Canadian businesses, researchers and public institutions develop and operate advanced AI applications locally, while maintaining greater control over their computing resources and operating arrangements.
The financing represents a significant investment in HIVE’s high-performance computing strategy as the company works to expand its AI infrastructure business and deliver capacity for its contracted sovereign AI customer.
