Telling the Hard Parts: Memoir Writing, Memory, and Finding Compassion with Author Slade Williams

Online For Authors Podcast

Show Notes

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Slade Williams, an author working on his memoir Non Prophet. We are doing something a little bit different today, talking about memoir writing but before he has his book published. Let’s take a look at what it is like in the trenches while writing a memoir.

Slade Williams is a writer, survivalist of a chaotic childhood, and a self-proclaimed "non-prophet." In his debut memoir, Non Prophet, Slade explores a unique knack for spotting mathematical patterns and connections between his own life and the major milestones of the Bible—specifically Jesus. Fully aware of how ridiculous that sounds, Slade leans heavily on dark humor and sarcasm as a necessary shield against his own delusions of grandeur. He anchors this spiritual odyssey in the gritty, often absurd reality of growing up in an alcoholic, abusive household. The result is a story that is equal parts cosmic and deeply grounded, proving that the best way to handle immense religious weight and childhood trauma is with a healthy dose of wit. Slade lives in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where he continues to look for patterns in the everyday chaos and tries very hard not to accidentally start a cult.
