Summary
Mathematicians have long sought to improve the efficiency of airplane boarding, a process often plagued by delays and congestion. Research highlights two primary bottlenecks: seat interference, where passengers in window seats are blocked by others, and aisle interference, which occurs when those seated in the back are hindered by earlier rows. The most common boarding method, back-to-front, takes approximately 23 minutes for a 156-passenger Airbus A320 but shows only marginal improvements over front-to-back boarding.
Alternative methods have emerged, including random seating, which can reduce boarding time slightly but creates its own issues, such as passengers struggling to find seats. A more promising approach is the Outside In method, which boards window seats first, followed by middle and aisle seats, cutting the time down to 16.5 minutes. However, astrophysicist Jason Steffen proposes an even faster solution, the Steffen Method, which can fully board the A320 in just 15 minutes. This method requires precise passenger cooperation and adherence to a specific boarding order, which may be challenging to implement in practice.
While engineering innovations, such as dual-door boarding and side-slip seating, could further enhance efficiency, airlines may hesitate to adopt these changes. The potential for faster boarding could diminish the incentive for passengers to pay extra for priority boarding, as long lines often encourage such purchases. Despite the quest for quicker boarding solutions, the time saved is relatively minimal, suggesting that patience and understanding may be the best approach for travelers.

After hours of delay, your flight is finally boarding. But as the line grinds to a halt, you can't help but think — there must be a faster way to board this plane. Mathematicians have been studying this problem for years, devising and testing a range of different boarding methods. Rachel Yang digs into our biggest plane-loading bottlenecks and potential methods to alleviate this travel headache. Social entrepreneur Felix Brooks-church is on a mission to solve "hidden hunger" -- malnutrition caused by a lack of nutrients -- by fortifying everyday foods for regions of the world hit hardest by food insecurity. Laying out a pragmatic vision to improve food systems globally, he reminds us that hunger doesn't always look like an empty plate.
