Low Carb Down Under

Dr. Ben Bikman - 'Shrinking Fat Cells: Energy vs. Insulin'

Low Carb Down Under

Summary

Marketers are increasingly voicing concerns over "bull spend," a term used to describe advertising expenditures that yield impressive metrics but fail to translate into actual revenue. In a recent discussion, industry professionals shared their frustrations about focusing on vanity metrics like impressions instead of meaningful outcomes. They emphasized the importance of cutting unnecessary spending and instead investing in platforms like LinkedIn, which reportedly offers a higher return on ad spend.

The conversation then shifted to the science of fat cells, particularly in relation to obesity and insulin resistance. A researcher explained the distinction between hypertrophic and hyperplastic fat cells, noting that hypertrophic cells grow larger but fewer in number, while hyperplastic cells increase in number but remain smaller. This growth dynamic is crucial in understanding how fat cells contribute to insulin resistance, a condition affecting nearly half of adults globally.

The speaker highlighted the importance of addressing insulin resistance at its root, suggesting that many chronic diseases stem from this issue. They also discussed the concept of the personal fat threshold, which varies among individuals and determines how much fat can be stored before health complications arise. The discussion concluded with insights on how hormonal regulation, particularly insulin, plays a critical role in fat metabolism and the implications for weight management strategies.

Dr. Benjamin Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. He is currently a professor of pathophysiology and a biomedical scientist at Brigham Young University in Utah. Dr. Bikman's professional focus as a scientist and professor is to better understand chronic modern-day diseases, with a special emphasis on the origins and consequences of obesity and diabetes, with an increasing scrutiny of the pathogenicity of insulin and insulin resistance. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science meetings.Dr. Bikman has long been an advocate of a ketogenic diet in light of the considerable evidence supporting its use as a therapy for reversing insulin resistance. His website InsulinIQ.com promotes dietary clarity, healing, and freedom through evidence-based science about insulin resistance. Employing cell-autonomous to whole-body systems, Dr. Bikman's recent efforts have focused on exploring the intimate associations between the metabolic and immune systems. This presentation has been provided by @LowCarbUSA with generous support from @keto-mojo7147 and was recorded at the 'Symposium for Metabolic Health - Boca' in January 2024.Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Dr Anthony Chaffee is an American medical doctor specialising in Neurosurgery who over a span of 20 years has researched the optimal nutritional habits for athletic performance and health. It is his assertion that most of the so-called chronic diseases that doctors treat these days are actually caused by the food we eat, or don’t eat, and can in many cases be reversed easily with dietary changes.Dr. Chaffee began his University education studying Molecular & Cellular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 15, which culminated in attaining his MD from the Royal College of Surgeons.Dr. Chaffee is an All-American rugby player and a former professional athlete in England and America, having taken several years off from his education for the pursuit of sports between his undergraduate degree and medical school. Throughout his athletic career he saw first hand the monumental difference that diet makes to performance and recovery.Dr. Chaffee almost accidentally came across and practiced a fully carnivorous diet from age 20 to 25, having first learned of the toxic nature of plants during his University education. Since then he has rediscovered this truth and more and has dedicated many years and a large part of his professional practice to the study and education of diet and nutrition. He personally practices a fully carnivorous diet and currently resides in Perth, Australia where he does private consultations and clinics in functional medicine and nutrition. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Dr Penny Figtree graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 with first class honours. With over 20 years in general practice she has now decided to focus on weight loss and diabetes. This decision was made after seeing the power of a low carbohydrate diet to help people lose weight and for some to even reverse diabetes. Dr Figtree had previously tried to help patients using various diets such as low fat diets, Optifast, the 5:2 fast but nothing really worked. In the end she would just say “as long as you are not gaining weight then that’s great”. Then Dr. Figtree read a book called “Always Hungry” By Professor David Ludwig where he explained the INSULIN CARBOHYDRATE MODEL OF OBESITY.Dr. Figtree has now been practising low carb medicine for several years. She describes this as the most rewarding part of her career, stopping medications and patients feeling well. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon.
