How I Spot a Machiavellian: The Dark Triad’s Most Dangerous Personality | Dr Daniel Jones

Eyes Wide Open

Show Notes

What if the person you think is a narcissist is actually something far more calculated?

In this revealing conversation, Dr. Daniel Jones, one of the leading researchers on the Dark Triad of personality (Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy) explains how to recognise manipulation, deception, predatory behaviour and the psychological traits that can make some people extraordinarily difficult to detect. We go deep into Machiavellianism, the psychology of the master manipulator and explore how Machiavellians differ from narcissists and psychopaths, how Dark Triad traits are measured, and whether intelligence, emotional control and delayed gratification can make manipulative personalities harder to spot.

Dr. Jones also explains the red flags to look for in dating, relationships and the workplace, including manipulation, seduction, narcissistic behaviour, emophilia and predatory behaviour. We discuss the psychology behind Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, narcissistic traits, psychopathy, callousness, lack of empathy, sadism, guilt and shame and ultimately ask one of the biggest questions in psychology: Does evil actually exist?
