Emotional Intelligence, Daily. Start now: https://www.theschooloflife.com/subscription/ It is a quiet tragedy that many relationships fail not due to a lack of love, but due to a failure in a basic yet vital skill: the art of emotional communication. This film explores why we struggle to speak our needs until we are at a breaking point, and how we can learn to express our most intimate truths with gentleness and self-possession before our affections are irreparably damaged. “It is tear-inducing just how much can go wrong in love because we fail to master a basic-sounding hugely important skill that would probably have been in place if our childhoods had given us the right experience: the art of saying how we feel, relatively close to when we actually feel it, in a way that can be heard, with gentleness and self-possession, before our affections are irreparably affected. In a better arranged world, we would have been trained for this from an early age. Alongside lessons in physics and geography, we would have learnt - in our Emotional Communication classes - exactly how to speak about our most intimate needs without causing upset…”

We have a very close sense of the stages of development of small children. But what about adults? How do we keep developing once we are ‘grown up’? And what are the key stages of development? Up until then, our growth is the subject of quite a lot of collective fascination. Twentieth-century psychology, beginning with the work of the Swiss clinician Jean Piaget, pioneered an approach to child development that meticulously identified and labelled every principal stage an average infant might go through on the developmental journey of its earliest years...”You can read more on this and other subjects here: https://goo.gl/CcJQkaMORE SCHOOL OF LIFEWatch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLselfSOCIAL MEDIAFeel free to follow us at the links below:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ X: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITSProduced in collaboration with:Alice Dunseathhttps://vimeo.com/user2681788http://www.alicedunseath.com/ #TheSchoolOfLife Learn more about your ad choices. It’s an enormous privilege to have an adolescence - and, to an extent rarely spoken about, not everyone gets the chance to have one. Adolescence isn’t just a particular time of one’s second decade, and it won’t unfold automatically simply when one reaches fourteen or seventeen and three quarters. Adolescence properly understood is a state in which we’re able to explore - with courage and newfound independence - who we might be outside of the projections and mental dictates placed upon us by our parents…

For too long, some of us are silent, afraid of voicing what we really want and telling others the important things that they need to hear. It isn't a good policy and with great care and compassion for ourselves, we deserve slowly to learn to discover our own voice.Uploaded 08-01-20Enjoying our Youtube videos? We don’t say quite say – until it is way too late – what is wrong, what we want, how we are angry, what we’re ashamed of and the way we would like things to be…”MORE SCHOOL OF LIFEWatch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLselfSOCIAL MEDIAFeel free to follow us at the links below:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ X: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITSProduced in collaboration with: Peter Caireshttps://www.petercaires.com/ Title animation produced in collaboration withVale Productionshttps://www.valeproductions.co.uk/ Learn more about your ad choices. Goethe is one of the great minds of European civilisation, though his work is largely unknown outside of the German speaking countries. We're always being told that we should make peace with how we look; but why? We never chose our bodies and nor should we necessarily be forced to identify with them. They're like a random taxi we were shoved into at birth. We've been forced to play the facial lottery and most of us are deeply unhappy with the results - and should in our own ways be allowed to be.Uploaded 06-05-20FURTHER READINGYou can read more on this and other subjects here: https://bit.ly/3ckaeVK"A characteristic emotion on seeing a favourite novel turned into a film is puzzlement. We may not hate the actor playing a particular role, we might even find them rather beautiful, it’s just that they tend not to be as we imagined they should be. We never thought that Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina or Ishiguro’s Stevens or Jane Austen’s Marianne Dashwood or Scott Fitzgerald’s Gatsby would look like quite… like that!..."MORE SCHOOL OF LIFEWatch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLselfSOCIAL MEDIAFeel free to follow us at the links below:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ X: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITSProduced in collaboration with:Mike Boothhttps://www.youtube.com/user/somegreyblokeTitle animation produced in collaboration withVale Productionshttps://www.valeproductions.co.uk/ Learn more about your ad choices.
