Ricky Handschumacher - Hacking Video Games Led To Hacking Crypto & My FBI Arrest

Ricky Handschumacher is a former computer hacker and ex-cyber criminal.

After getting hacked on Xbox as a teenager, Ricky followed the rabbit hole of learning to also hack video games. What started as hacking and selling Xbox gamertags led to hacking and selling Instagram & Twitter handles and eventually hacking & stealing crypto currency.

Over seven years Ricky stole about $8 million mostly through social engineering. A type of hacking that typically involves convincing the user or network provider to unknowingly provide crucial information used to obtain accounts. This allowed Ricky to sell unique Xbox, Instagram and Twitter handles but also drain crypto wallets dry.

Ricky’s friend in Michigan was first caught and the FBI brought down six other hackers during the sting. Ricky spent four years with an ankle monitor awaiting trial and was sentenced to 48 months in prison. He served 27 months and is now advocating ethical hacking and cyber security.
