Better Dads Club Podcast

Show Notes

In this episode Tom sits down with renowned neuroscience educator, speaker and author Nathan Wallis for Part 1 of a two-part conversation about parenting, brain development and what our kids really need from us.

Nathan is a father, grandfather and foster parent with a professional background in child trauma counselling, teaching and human development.

He spent many years lecturing in Human Development at the University of Canterbury and has built a reputation for taking complex neuroscience and translating it into practical, easy-to-understand insights for parents and families.

This conversation begins with Nathan sharing his incredibly challenging childhood, his experiences in foster care and how those early experiences influenced the father he became.

From there, Tom and Nathan explore the developing brain, ages and stages, behaviour as communication, raising confident kids, music and language, and how we can create an environment that encourages our kids to learn without taking the fun out of learning.

Nathan also gives Tom some practical advice around challenges he's currently navigating with his own three-year-old.

***Stop Putting Your Health on Hold. Take the first step with the Dad Bod Reset, our six-week small-group coaching programme designed for busy dads.*** What does it take to stay strong, healthy and active for your kids, not just today, but in 10, 20 or even 30 years? In this episode, Tom sits down with Dave Liow, exercise physiologist, founder of Holistic Movement Coach and father of two, to explore the importance of investing in your health for the long game of fatherhood. Both Tom and Dave became fathers later in life, and having spent decades working in health and wellness, they share a passion for helping dads stay healthy, capable and present as their children grow. In this conversation, they explore: The challenges of moving countries, rebuilding a business and raising a young family. Why strength, mobility and healthy habits become increasingly important as we age. How parents can support sporty teenagers without pushing them towards burnout or overtraining. Practical ways busy dads can prioritise their health without sacrificing family time. Why finding a deeper purpose is the key to lasting lifestyle changes. And perhaps most importantly, it's never too late to start. Whether you're in your 30s, 40s, 50s or 60s, even if you've never exercised before, positive changes are possible. Because looking after your health isn't just about living longer. It's about being able to participate in your children's lives, and one day, your grandchildren's too. Be Better for Your Kids.
