The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents “The Vanishing Elephant,” originally broadcast on October 8, 1945. This is episode 187 of the series, starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson.
An urgent summons takes Holmes and Watson from London to Parbutypur, India, where a Maharaja’s safety—and the future of his dynasty—are tied to a rare sacred white elephant. As an annual palace festival nears, Holmes confronts courtly tension, rival interests, and a troubling threat surrounding the revered animal. The original Mutual Broadcasting System presentation was written by Anthony Boucher and Denis Green and sponsored by Petri Wines.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience.
